Hey guys,

I am looking at buying a Defender that has had touch up done to the sides. There are black spots that look 'flat' all over the place. Overall the side art (especially the colors) looks pretty good except for the black splotches.

Do you think it would be possible to sand the whole side with 400 grit and clear coat to get a universal sheen? I would use an HVLP touch-up spray gun. What type of paint/varnish would you recommend for the clear coat?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks! Ryan

I have not tried this but I used to work in a body shop, and 400 is definitely too coarse. Maybe 1200 or even Scotch-brite. You really just want to break the gloss so your top coat will stick. The sheen will be dictated by your top coat. Maybe a clear semi-gloss polyurethane? Is there anything you can run a test panel on?

Thanks! I was hoping to find a cab with near perfect side art but that seems to be pretty much impossible with Defenders so I will probably have to do a resto to get what I want.

So, Scotch-brite and clear semi-gloss polyurethane. Any other suggestions?

Yes, I've done this very thing and it works well to hide slight differences in paint color and sheen. Use a lighter sandpaper though.

Thanks! Think I am going to use Minwax Polycrylic. Should I use Semi-gloss or gloss for a Defender?
