Clear coat questions

No sanding - but be careful. First of all make 1000% sure that the surface paint is 100% cured out. If not as the clear coat dries it shrinks and willl grab onto the under paint causing it to distort/wrinkle. The same can be said for ensuring the (if a second coat is necessary) first layer clear coat is dry. Adding wet to semi wet will also end in a wrinkle fest.

i have used minwax polycrylic on my painted machines. satin finish. I used a very fine sandpaper and LIGHTLY sand between coats...just barely touching it. Worked great for me. Get a quality paintbrush to apply it. Take your time.

What type of paint are you clear coating over? What type of clear are you using?

I use Automotive Base/Clear. My base is ready to clear in 1 hour, and I don't sand between coats. But if I don't particularly like the way the finish comes out ie orange peel. I'll sand it and buff it.

That's good to hear. I'm also using automotive Base/Clear.

This is the first time I've used automotive paints, and they are exceptional. Fast drying and they go on perfectly smooth. Biggest problem is the cost!

No need to sand the basecoat..

Actually the clear may show your sanding marks

Just make sure its clean. Use a wax and grease remover to clean the surface and it will also kind of open the basecoat surface.

Most manufacturers have a 24 hour window for clear coat. But I dont think it will cause an issue with what you are doing.

The was and grease remover will help, like I said to open the surface. Or you may try some 2000 grit and wet sand. But I have had problems on car with the sand marks showing (especially with metallics) but once agai it shouldnt effect what your doing.

What brand of paint is your clear?

Have you had it flattened a little? I think an egg-shell or satin would be best.

You can sand with a 600 with no problems of sand marks showing on solid colors. You are correct 24 hour window is normal, but since your cabinet isn't going to be seeing wind, rain, and other outside elements you'll be ok going later. You may want to use a grey scotch brite before clearing, and using wax/grease remover before clearing. Also use a tack rag.
