ok just picked up a nintendo space demon (never heard of it but it seems like a licend clone of space firebird)

i have some major graffix glitch problems and before i rap this game and install a jaama harness and a 48/60 in 1 im gonna give it a shot with some repairs

ok here is my glitches game seems to play fine but all the sprites are garbled or not correct

here is the board set in ?

i pulled the main set(still trying to figure an easy way to remove the ecss board attached to the underside of the monitor frame without pulling the monitor as well)

pulled all the roms and socketed chips and the ribbon cables and reseatd them
and i got a good pic again with only verry slight graffix glitches
turned of the machine and when i turned it back on later the full glitches came back

well when i pulled the roms i noticed some corosion (i.e white fuzzy stuff) in the chip sockets so today i ran out and got this stuff

i had 2 choices at the store the stuff i got or stuff from the same brand but it was just contact cleaner not super contact cleaner
they bolth were the same price
the only diffrence is the stuff i got says it bonds to metal and protects ic legs ect.ect.
is the stuff i got safe to use on my boards to clean the chip sockets or should i run back and just get the regular cleaner

ok freaking weird i went ahead and cleaned all the socketed chips and ic/s and reseated them
still no improvment so i decided to bust out the ol pc parts box and replace the ribbion cables

while repaccing the one thats connects the 2 board set to the ess board under the monitor i found somthing that is weird
if i only part way plug in the ribbon cable (using a new floppy cable with key tabs cut off)the game goes perfect but if i insert it all the way i get the garbled graffix and red bleed
if i puse it almost all the way in i get good graffix but red bleed

arggggg well im going to reflow the heaqder pins on the ess board for the cables
any ideas if that does not work

man its nice talking to my self lol

Clean those pins and replace that cable.

Or, "puse" it all the way in so you have good graphics but red bleed, then try turning your red or contrast down...

already did bolth (replace cable /clean pins )
and monitor adjustments do nothing for the red bleed its more like a graffix glitch than bleed on the monitor
after messing around a little more i found that if i evenly place the ribbon cable in tis all garbled but if i stick one side in more than the other its fine

if i push the cable all the way in i get totaly scrambled graffix with red bleed
slightly push it in i get perfect pic
push it part way on one side fully on other i get god graffix but with red bleed

crap also just broke a cap leg while reflowing the header pins it a 104z cap (flat oarnge one)

will any 104 cap work or are these rated i see no uf or voltage on the cap (i have a toast frogger board that is loaded with 104 flat orange caps but they do not say 104z)

104Z = Z5U type 0.1uF capacitor. Must be a disc cap with value of 0.1uF. Z5U means "give me the cheapest cap you've got".
Don't know the voltage rating - what type of signal is on the line that it broke from?

its the sound circut it looks loke as its in line with the sound pot
i went ahead and pulled a 104 (unmarked with anything els but 104) form my beat froggers sound circut its the same size and i have sound again so i hope its correct lol

im still having no luck with the graffix problems tho

i can get it this good by only partily inserting the ribbin cable

looks like ill ned to cap the montor tho cause the adjustment pots ar not affecting the red bleed

ribbon cable fully in (ship ijust weird words are just garbage and there is a green line that rolls across the screen left to right)

with it only in part way (all graffix look great ship is correct allong with letters and numbers but major red bleed)this way tho it wont start a game

Very strange...

Here is what you need to do...

Send me the board (as I am looking for one), and be done with it... problem solved... no more graphics issues... :)

Try recompressing the cable terminators. Sometimes those IDC (insulation displacement connector) cable clamps work their way loose. If you have a vice just clamp the connector in with some cloth for padding and clamp it down. Otherwise, carefully (and I mean carefully) use a pair of pliers to squeeze the connector down on the cable. Start at one end and lightly squeeze the connector, move the pliers down a little and squeeze again, repeat until you have gone the whole distance of the connector. Repeat on any other connectors.

im leaning twards a bad ess pc board as i have meterd everything and voltages are a little low but nothing to fret over (12 v is at 11.95 5v is at 4.99)

seems vid board and and cpu board are ok as the cable im dealing with goes from the 2 baord set to the ess cpu board and i can unplug it and i get full sound still and game still play in attract mode but it only shows the blue color on the screen

anyone have a spare ess board lying around

are you reffering to the cable itself or the connectors on the board i have tried a new cable with the same results ans the original cable

mark i dont see how my cpu sockets will cause the problems im having all the sockets seem firm and only 2 had crosion on them and they were rom sockets

magnifing glass into the end of the connector to see the spacing of the pins in there if you can. sure sounds like the pins are weak and arent gripping the header pin tight enough. i would just replace the connector/pins and eliminate wiggle problem.

i would love to buy some sort of tool/crimper, for making those kinds of ribbon cables. do you think 41st and Main has them?

idk they are hit n miss when i go down there and last ime i was down there looking for monitor pots the dumb ass said they didnt have the ones i needed called later for another part and talked to another guy he said yes we do carry thoes and shure as shit when i went to pick up the caps i needed he had 2 set aside for me arggggggg
