Here's a dumb question, is there any reason I should worry about wiping down the backside of CRTs? I know they're coated with something, but I thought I'd ask how vulnerable that is if I were to wipe it down with Fantastic and paper towels?

I recently got an old B&W Motorolla XM-701 that's filthy and I figured I'd completely clean it before installation, the PCB I'm going to clean with Fantastic and Q-tips.

Don't use a brush on the aquadag on the back of the glass tube. (The grey colored stuff) It might come off. I found a hose won't wash it off on MOST monitors if I use the "shower" setting. The "Jet" setting may take it off. Works like a champ......and yes, the second link are my photos. No hot sun right now in Texas though. Maybe later this week.

that takes balls!

Not really. Did you ever look at the way that section is designed. The water won't go into the monitor as the anode hole is inclosed. I've done several monitors that way and never had an issue. (just make sure it dries completely)

If that hole was truly open, there would be no vacuum.

I usually use either Simple Green or scrubbing bubbles, outside..spray it down, wait. Then wipe over the entire thing with a wet brush, to knock the gunk loose. Rinse with water, then tilt on side and let dry in the hot sun. I've cleaned em in the bathtub, just takes a lot longer to dry inside.

Yeah the anode hole is closed off just inside a bit. I've never bothered to cover it when washing a monitor. Just make sure it is dried out fully.

I wash my monitors w/ Simple Green and a brush (avoiding brushing the aquadag while wet), then air dry them off a bit and leave them in the sun for a day or so. I was the chassis in the sink w/ Simple Green, after blowing them off w/ compressed air and a light brushing.
