Hey guys, I know this isn't technically an arcade question, but here goes:

One of the guys at work brought an Atari 7800 to work. We've been playing the crap out of Joust, Dig-Dug, Ms Pac-Man, Choplifter, and Centipede. What other 7800 ports are worth a look? I noticed Robotron has one ;)

Robotron with 2 trackballs kicks butt on the 7800!

That was the next thing I was gonna ask: does Robotron actually support the 2-joystick control method? I want to know before I waste my $5 or whatever getting it off half.com

Most definitely!

The reason I say trackballs is because they sit and don't tip over.

I guess if you had the suction-cup joysticks it might work as well.

Holy crap - IM is $70+? I used to sell them $10 NIB! Wonder if I have any left......

Oh great, trackballs, how much is that? You're giving me collector fever ;)

I went ahead and got Mario Bros, DK and DK Jr and I'll probably get Robotron as well.

Does DK for 7800 have all 3 screens?

Anyone play the Rampage for 7800? Is it worth $15?

Looks like Best has the CX80 for $18. I don't know if that NIB or used, sorry.

To be honest I don't remember DK/DK Jr, sorry.

Wow, now I need to drag out my 7800 and play!

I liked Ikari Warriors, Xenophobe, and Kung Fu Master. All three are solid adaptations of their arcade brethren.

Rampage was decent, but it seems to me it suffered from either being too easy or slow or something... but it has been about 10 years since I last played it, so I may be misremembering it.

Kyle

To get:

Food Fight has been mentioned, as has Galaga. Get them.
Robotron is easier than the arcade version, but does scratch the itch.
Asteroids has a 2-player simultaneous version, and Centipede. Please note: 2-player simultaneous Centipede games can last a very, very, long time; 2+hours or more, due to some game mechanics.
Xevious is good, but the arcade's better. Worth $5-10, but don't go too crazy on getting it.
Look up the homebrew games on Atari Age; 'Bn*Q' (Q*Bert) 'Beef Drop' (Burgertime) and Jr. Pac. They're astounding.
If you really want to fall down the rabbit hole, look for a 'Cuttle Cart2' on Ebay; they're the multicart for the 7800, but not made anymore. They won't be cheap!

And don't forget the 7800 can play 2600 games! (some exceptions)

OK, which one of you jokers bought that Rampage cart off eBay? ;)

I'll have to try those 2 player Centipede and Asteroids games.

Playability wise, stick with these:
Asteroids
Food Fight
Galaga
Joust
Ms. Pac-Man
Xevious

The other games are interesting to look at a couple of times, but the playability is questionable at best. Especially Robotron, which is unfairly terrible. The 5200 port is better, but not by a whole lot.

Not an arcade port, but no 7800 collection is complete without Ball Blazer. Great game especially with 2 players.

Also, I'd invest in a euro 7800 controller. The joysticks we got here in the west suck ass. I'd also get a trackball for Centipede.

DK should have 4 screens. Not sure if the 7800 version has all 4, but it should because the Atari computer version does.

The 7800 version only has 3 and the music is not so good.

Make sure and check out a lot of the new ports that have been made in the last couple of years; Q*bert, Burgertime, Space Invaders, Moon Cresta and Scramble just to name a few.

I got DK, DK jr, Mario Bros and Robotron. DK is way too easy and missing 4th screen. Can't comment on the sound because I have to keep it low at work. DK Jr is OK, Robotron is OK, and Mario Bros is a very solid port. Joust is still the best thing I've played on the system so far.

I've read about the homebrew/remakes like Mitch mentioned, does anyone know where to get them? I want an actual cart per game or a cart writer that will work in an actual 7800. Let me know.
