This is a game I enjoy playing on coin-op or mame. But I have always used an 8-way controller for this title. The 8-way controller allows me to do a back-jump up to the platform above, (pushing diagonal-up), opposite of the direction my car is traveling. And most of the time I use this maneuver, it is timed slightly after I change directions. Comes in handy for later stages when the platforms are small and I need to get back to the top.

I am currently putting together a cabinet with this pcb and was searching for a manual or schematic. Found a manual online and noticed Jaleco has a 4-way joystick listed in the manual.

So I am wondering if the back-jump maneuver was never designed by Jaleco when making the game back in 1985. I am unable to do the move with a 4-way joystick.

Just curious if anybody else plays this game on coin-op or mame?
And what setup do you use for a controller? 4-way or 8-way?

Couldn't you press jump while holding UP, then after the jump had started, push LEFT or RIGHT to change the car's direction? That did what you're saying, only with a slight complication. Once the car hit mid-stride of its jump, you could no longer change direction until it landed. Fun game. I hated the cat, of course.

I will fire up this game on mame with a 4-way controller and see if that move works.

Just gave that move a try with a 4-way and it does not work. Only with the 8-way joystick I can consistently pull off the back-jump. But I would like to find some original instructions for this game and see if Jaleco had this maneuver listed.

Or I wonder if the NES version has this back-jump move listed. Never played the NES or console versions.
