I know MACH 3 and Mad Planets joysticks are effectively the same.

It appears the joystick from Choplifter is very similar as well... but is it the same?

That's been a question for a long time. Choplifter usually had a trigger joystick. but not necessarily the two buttons on the joystick itself.

I've never known Choplifter to have a triggered joystick. The original CPO shows a strafing (fire) button and a direction change button. There was no trigger on the joystick.

By chance, I have a MACH 3 cabinet that was, at one point, converted to a Choplifter and they didn't even keep the trigger stick in that.

Seems many MACH 3's were converted to Choplifters...

I would guess that since so many MACH 3 machines were converted, a lot of operators saw the benefit in implementing the MACH 3 buttons into the new game. That's actually pretty cool!

But the very few original Choplifter games that were in dedicated Sega cabs (the same ones used for Wonderboy) had the regular joystick and two button layout on the CP.

I was at Funspot last week, and the Mad Planets there I noticed had a plastic Gottlieb embossed logo in the insert of the Joystick. I do not think Mach 3 had this.

Like mentioned above the dedicated one didn't even have a flight stick, so I think most of them that people have seen are just the same stick that was in Mach 3...

Here's a dedicated one I had a while back, such a cool cabinet

So after all is said and done a regular ball-top joystick and two buttons is default for Choplifter. (The CPO doesn't lie).

I just happened to live in an area where the operator/s kept the trigger joysticks when converting.
