So, I played Shoplifter a ton as a kid and never knew you could do this until sometime last year.
When you have hostages loaded in the helicopter and get shot down, you loose the hostages, and there are fewer for you to rescue and the ones that die get account for under lost.
However if you get shot down and move the joystick up and down while pushing the buttons they actually eject out and parachute down to the ground safely. On your next life they will be walking around on the ground somewhere, or in the case of the level with ships they are swimming in the water.

Some of you probably already know this, so no surprise.
However, I was telling a couple of the local guys about this and they didn't believe me.
So, heres a couple photos from last night of me getting shot down and the hostage parachuting out. Pretty cool. Cant believe I played this as long as I did without knowing this. LOL :D

This is the first time I have ever heard of it and I've been playing it since the Apple IIe days. It's always cool to learn something new.

Going to power up Choplifter now ! I love this game and have never seen that trick. I played the crap out of it BITD.

Sometimes it's just fun to do a hard landing on top of the prisoners just to hear the awesome sampled scream.

I did not know this trick ... very cool.

Also, I wonder how many KLOV'rs also were shoplifters as kids? I bet a few. :004_sbiggrin:

Been a while since I've played it, but do you need to even move the joystick? I seem to recall just rapidly tapping the fire button only to make them eject.

I just went and turned it back on to test that. Your partially correct.
Its the angle adjust button that does it.

The first time I found out the hostages could eject was when I got pissed when I died and and moved the joystick up and down smacking the button. I believe the words "fuck" were involved because I was one load away from beating the level 2.

I guess the reason I never realized this before is because once I'm loaded up with hostages I'm focus on getting back to the base and firing. Never pushed the change angle button.

I don't know how many levels there are, but there are at least 3...I can get o the third.

1st: open area
2nd: ships/water
3rd: caves

That's the same as the version I have

Level 1: Desert terain
Level 2: Ocean level with ships
Level 3: Jungle and Cave level. You start in the jungle and then fly though a cave in the mountain which is hard as hell and I haven't got past it.

Was this ever in the instruction sheet at the arcade? I also now am curious about the apple IIe version as that's what I played it on

I've played this game a TON back in the day and never knew about this. Looks like I have something to try come Grinkfest.
