I'm going to replace the 6502 on my Asteroids. Bob Roberts has:

6502A 2mhz
6502B 3mhz
6502C 4mhz

The manual calls for 6502A (1 1/2 mhz) and the game is currently using the 6502A. Will the 2 mhz work? I would think you can go higher, just not lower, like the voltage on caps, right? Would I be just as well off getting the C?

You are correct.

The rating on the CPU is only for the Max speed it is rated to run at.

Putting a 2MHz rated CPU in a game that only runs it at 1 1/2 MHz clock speed will still only run that CPU at 1 1/2 MHz clock speed. It'll run fine.

Now if you have a board that requires a 6502B which is rated at 3MHz and you put in a 6502A which is only rated at 2MHz will give unpredicable results. It could run fine... it may randomly crash... or it may simply refuse to run. Hard to tell.

Only downsides to the higher speed (rated) ICs are increased price, and decreased availability.

As suggested, the "C" varietiy can be installed pretty much universally.
