I received one of those chip lifting tools because I want to try to clean up the various chips and reseat them properly.. I've never done this before, I dont think it should be a problem, but is there any easy technique I should know about, or tricks?

Removing chips is a breeze with a very thin and long screwdriver. I have never used a special tool. I really like using a thin and long screwdriver, works great.

I just use a flathead jeweler's screwdriver. Slide it under one end of the chip. While gently pushing down on the chip with the other hand, pull/push up with the screwdriver and rocker it back and forth lengthwise quickly but gradually until the chip is out. Keeps all the pins nice and straight.

Just be careful too that you're only pulling up the chip and not the socket. Sometimes there's not much gap at all between the chip and it's socket and it's easy to start pulling at the socket if you're not careful.

As mentioned, the trick to slowly lift EACH side of the eprom bit by bit.

Start on one side, and lift 1/16" of inch.
The go to the other side the do the same thing.

Then come back to the first side and lift it little bit higher.
(... I find simply twisting the screw-driver works well )

Pretty easy when you get the hang of it...

Good luck.

I swear I read the thread title as "Chop lifting - triks for the newbie"....I had a confused look on my face for a minute reading the first post...WTF does this have to do with Choplifter I thought. Guess I should have worn my glasses today.

Use a small screwdriver to get the chip about half-way out the socket to loosen it, then use your chip-puller to pull it straight up. Problem with extracting it with just a screwdriver is that you will inevitably bend the pins on the opposite side you're lifting. When using the chip puller, get firm fist grip on it before pulling straight up. Yeah I'm really good at doing that for some reason.

That's why you use the screwdriver to lift it part way and then switch ends. If it is real long, like a CPU chip, then lift slightly, slide the screwdriver part way in and twist it. The flat plade will act to pry the chip out of the socket cleanly. Then go to the other end and repeat. If necessary switch ends a couple of times.

The key is to go slow and don't try to lift the chip in one shot. You are guaranteed to bend the last few pins that way.

Belt Sander, 80 Grit.

Actually, like everyone else, I use a flat bladed screwdriver. Just be careful not to cut any traces under a socket while prying a chip out.
