Does anyone here sell or know of someone that does sell a TTL assortment package that might contain the most common chips? Or does everybody just buy one of?

I don't know of any but it is usually cheaper, as far as shipping, to buy a tube or more. I am in the same boat as you and am looking at buying several tubes of the common 74ls type chips. If you need a certain chip(s) let me know and when I place my rather large order I will throw in a tube or two of em.

Thanks for the offer...

I did do that with caps once. Somebody posted a list of the most common cap values. I think that it might have been Ken Layton but not sure. Either way, I spent about 125 dollars at Mouser and have a very good assortment. I will probably wind up doing the same thing with the chips. It would be nice to have a list though.

Just top of my head

74ls688
74ls157
74ls193
74ls174
74ls161
74ls32
74ls08

Not to mention eproms, proms, cpu chips z80, z80a and voltage regulators. Filter caps. audio amps and support chips.

Jameco Electronics has assortments and grab bags:

They also sell prepackaged kits with certain chips:

I own this kit and like it. I recommend starting with this kit plus 10x of each common socket. I'm still always ordering parts, but each time I'll stock-up with 5x or 10x of each chip for future use.

I ordered a second cabinet but I didn't see any claim of how ESD-safe the drawers are. Logic chips are fine, but I'm reluctant to store really static sensitive things (RAMs, amplifiers, etc) loose in that cabinet unless I can find documentation. Can anybody recommend any other cabinet that is inexpensive and documented to be ESD safe?

Well, now I know who local to call if I need any spare components!! j/k :)

Wish idve thought to check jameco before ordering some parts from mouser, the m48t58y chips are $6 cheaper!

The kit is probably fine, but after buying one of their socket grab bags, I've sworn off the grab-bag concept from them. There were in fact a lot of sockets in the bag, but frankly there was a lot of junk in the bag as well (aside from the expected broken pins, there was the kind of trash you'd expect at the bottom of a parts bin that hadn't been cleaned in years). Also, while there were several different types and sizes of sockets, they were mostly all of two types, neither of which has yet proven helpful. I'm guessing the same will happen with 74 logic.
