Checking out a Tempest on Friday!

I see you cut out a big portion of my reply. So youre saying you can drive all the way here to Reno to pick up a POS Tempest, but you dont want to waste your time offering to save this nice cabinet and offer your shitty cabinet in exchange? Youre bashing and insulting him for converting a nice cabinet, but you arent willing to offer your perfect restoration/conversion candidate thats sitting dead in your garage?

Hm. Well, whatever...

My Tempest is working now. I just need to fix the cabinet. Lol at trying to put the blame on me for the other game not being saved. Nice try. I am sure there is someone in Phoenix that would buy that game as is and enjoy it as is. Besides, putting MH conversion side art on an early art work Tempest would be an even bigger waste.

Cool. I'll hit you up if/when the time comes.

As for the "why not pick up a broken Tempest" argument, I ask "at the end of the day, what's the difference?" If it's going to be converted anyway, at least I can help fellow KLOVers get their games running in the process. Why should broken or working come into play? Should I just wait around for a broken or beat up one to pop up on CL, and pass on ones that have nice cabs and a healthy monitor? Should I just let working games that don't get played and sit unused continue to sit on CL unsold and still not getting played based on some sort of arcade principle?

Couldn't one also make the argument that by allowing my Hajor Havoc PCB and conversion board to sit in my garage in a box unused that I'm equally robbing the world of a Major Havoc? Atari made MH kits specifically for conversion from Tempest. I don't see how doing what is essentially an "Atari sanctioned" converion violates some sort of arcade bro-rule.

I'm going to convert a game I love into a game I love even more. I'm going to turn a game that's collecting dust to a game that'll be played regularly.

Anyway, I'm not looking to get into the whole conversion debate. I know that's been done to death, and there are strong opinions on both sides.
I'm just excited to be possibly getting a new game. My game room only has enough space for one more game, and this one's been on my list for a long time.

Look at it however you want, but at the end of the day you are still wasting a perfectly good game.

Well, like everybody says, youre supposedly so dead-set on preserving the arcade universe and you always cry wahh wahh wahh and start throwing insults and bitch fits whenever someone parts out or converts a game, But YOU rarely ever step up to the plate to save said game. Instead, we all have to listen to your pissing and moaning. It annoys me. A lot.

I think you are really just annoyed that I scored some games in Reno. I step up to save a game every chance I get. I just drove all the way to Reno for a pos Tempest, remember ? You know what is really annoying ? All the new hacks in this hobby like yourself. I shouldn't have to save a game from anyone on this forum.

I see no harm in this. Other KLOVer's Tempest machines will benefit from this, and This Old Game, a site dedicated to restoring machines produces the artwork for a Tempest cab. Why should he have to restore a POS Tempest if once restored it's in the same shape as the one he's purchasing?

Yes, I am bawling my eyes out because you scored a Tempest in Reno. Honestly, I couldnt care less, because where theres 1, theres another. And another. But thats not the point. Besides, Ive disliked your attitude since WAY before that occurence.

And you step up every chance you get? HA! Grade A bullshit. If you step up to save games every chance you get, then why dont you buy all of VectorVanish's sub-$250 games that he cant get rid of? I bet you I can talk to dozens of members that have had to part out a great game because they couldnt dump it even at a very low price, and they NEVER heard a peep out of you, unless it was to say "OMG WTF? YOURE PARTING IT OUT?! DAMN YOU TO HELL!" Or something along those lines. For example, you could have easily saved that Defender I parted not too long ago had you just made an offer. But no, you decided to bitch at me, insult me, etc. I am tired of it. Until we start seeing dozens of games flooding into your house at a time, then your opinion about parting out or converting games shows very little value.

Can't wait! The guy can't show it until Friday, so I have to wait a couple days, but apparently I'm first in line. Assuming I get it, I'll be converting it to a Major Havoc, complete with TOG's custom side art. Stay tuned...

Good luck on the purchase!!!

I hate to see it converted though. It won't be a dedicated machine... but like they say its yours to do what you want with! :) I'm sure someone else will appreciate the parts.

In Arc's defense, he lives in the Treasure Valley IDAHO... not really the center of activity in this world. Surely no one expects him to be able to save P.O.S. games hundreds if not thousands of miles away.

You're going in the wrong direction if you're questioning Dave's dedication to this hobby.

Nevermind, was trying to be clever with a pic of Randy King saying "can't we all just get along". Oh well, sounds like there are some passionate folks on this one. If Atari made kits for it to be converted to MH- shouldn't that trump anything anyone has a problem with?

The Art is aftermarket. There are a lot of purists in here that want games as they came from the Factory. Kits don't count :)

For the sake of argument... Nintendo made Playchoice kits for Midway (Pac/Ms Pac) machines... does that make that conversion any more acceptable?

Who knows

Not sure, was not aware of that. But since Atari designed and produced both Tempest and Major Havoc it seems like that one should be more acceptable than the majority of conversions. It is clear that some people are absolutely against conversions of any kind and others don't take a such a strong stance. No worries, to each his own - I just like playing games, and having them look the way they did when I first played them. If I can play a game that I loved and it happens to be a converted cab, I can usually live with it while I look for the original or parts to restore it.

Like I said, i should never have to save a game from a member on this forum. You love to use absolutes like "always", "everybody", and "never," the truth is, you don't know half of what I do in regards to arcade games. I have forgotten about more machines that I saved than you have ever owned. If you saw the list, you would realize how foolish you look.

I am not questioning his dedication whatsoever. Obviously he has an extreme love and dedication towards this hobby which I respect. Its the way he goes about expressing it. Someone posts that theyre excited about going to grab a nice Tempest and turning it into a game they love even more, and he feels the need to put a big raincloud over it by saying things like "This thread makes me sick" or "Thats a waste of a Tempest." I mean come on. Let the guy be excited. And like I said before, its a common Tempest, they made thousands of them. Now, if he was turning a dedicated Major Havoc INTO a Tempest conversion, then obviously theres something wrong with that. And besides, he could end up with the first Tempest to use TOGs MH artwork, which will look incredibly awesome.

Was it something I said.. :(

To each his own.
Do what you will that makes you happy.
Isn't that at least PART of why we are alll here?
Just wish I could find a "Common" Tempest to resurrect for a cheap price. Haven't seen one down south since I've been looking.
Loved that game but haven't played it in way too many years. May not be so fun anymore these days, dunno.
Guaranteed that once they become "Uncommon", then the preservation begins.
Until then, let the man Live!
Geesh! Although, did I mention I REALLY LIKED THAT GAME?

I kind of chuckled about that myself. I've only seen a few in my area, one was at the Video Game expo in Philly of 2008 and I think the person wanted either 200 or 300 and I think it was incomplete, and shortly after the only ones I saw were $1500..

So I bought the shabby-Shinobi-converted one I have now for $35.

Last year, two of us here in Reno brought home a Tempest, and fairly cheap, but they both came from LA. That doesn't count the one that recently left town for Washington. You just have to be patient and jump when you see a good deal.

And yes, Tempest is still as fun as back then. I think it has held up really well. That was probably my favorite addition so far, just because I always thought it would be out of my budget.
