Can't wait! The guy can't show it until Friday, so I have to wait a couple days, but apparently I'm first in line. Assuming I get it, I'll be converting it to a Major Havoc, complete with TOG's custom side art. Stay tuned...

(seriously, good luck- I'm just trying to put a Tempest back together after one of you blasphemous converters anal-raped my Tempest and turned her into a shabby Shinobi)

If it was the one on CL...I already picked it up.

:D Just kidding. Good Luck. Post pics.

Hahaha. Nice one. My heart actually sank a little. It is the one on CL. I talked to the guy on the phone this morning. He seems cool. Hopefully it'll all work out. I'll post pics if it does.

Oh, and those of you carrying torches, don't get too bummed. I love Tempest too, so I'll probably enjoy it as such for a bit before I get started on the conversion. I have all the components ready to go, save for the side art. I'm thinking about getting a roller control, but I'll probably give the spinner a whirl first.

If you have a nice Tempest marquee when you do the conversion, would you consider selling it? I need a nice original.

Yeah, absolutely. The CL pic of the marquee is very washed out, so it's hard to tell what sort of shape it's in. If it's nice, and I wind up getting the machine, I'll give you dibs. I'll have no need for the control panel and PCB either, so I'll probably sell those as well.

Why convert a complete machine. Why not get a project game or a Tempest that has been converted to something lame and convert it to a MH . What a waste of a Tempest. Threads like this make me sick.

I was thinking of buying it... I wonder what happens to the games I don't buy.
I didn't feel like driving up to phoenix just for a game I have no idea how I would like.

If your turning it into a major havoc at least pretend that It all ready was one and you didn't know so we wouldn't care.:D

I would be interested in a nice PCB when you get tired of it and start the conversion.....

Major Havoc > Tempest. Convert it! Plus, can't you just keep the Tempest parts to swap back in every once in while?

The only reason to convert a perfectly good Tempest is due to a lack of patience. There are plenty of projects and converted games to turn into a MH.

If he was converting that Tempest into a Street Fighter, I would understand your argument. But he is turning this dime-a-dozen Tempest into a very rare and MUCH more desireable Major Havoc. Tempests arent in short supply. If youre so concerned about it, why dont you pony up your beatup Tempest cabinet in a trade? Put your Tempest where your mouth is.

I think that with Rich's new side art, it will look badass!

Me too. What a waste of a great game. I am actually looking for a nice tempest.

I think you are mistaking a converted MH with a dedicated one. Converted MH's dont sell for much more than a Tempest. This is a waste of a perfectly good Tempest. Explain to me what would be so hard about waiting for a project Tempest to convert instead.

Cool. I'll hit you up if/when the time comes.

As for the "why not pick up a broken Tempest" argument, I ask "at the end of the day, what's the difference?" If it's going to be converted anyway, at least I can help fellow KLOVers get their games running in the process. Why should broken or working come into play? Should I just wait around for a broken or beat up one to pop up on CL, and pass on ones that have nice cabs and a healthy monitor? Should I just let working games that don't get played and sit unused continue to sit on CL unsold and still not getting played based on some sort of arcade principle?

Couldn't one also make the argument that by allowing my Hajor Havoc PCB and conversion board to sit in my garage in a box unused that I'm equally robbing the world of a Major Havoc? Atari made MH kits specifically for conversion from Tempest. I don't see how doing what is essentially an "Atari sanctioned" converion violates some sort of arcade bro-rule.

I'm going to convert a game I love into a game I love even more. I'm going to turn a game that's collecting dust to a game that'll be played regularly.

Anyway, I'm not looking to get into the whole conversion debate. I know that's been done to death, and there are strong opinions on both sides.
I'm just excited to be possibly getting a new game. My game room only has enough space for one more game, and this one's been on my list for a long time.

Believe me I hate conversions as much as most anyone. Especially a color vector, that is a sin. This one though has merit, it was made to be from Atari and keeps it vector. In the long run it really hurts nobody and a semi-rare vector game gets a new cab while another couple of vectors get parts.

Another one for me would be somebody finding a Star Trek Asteroids conversion and putting it in a working Asteroids cab. Asteroids are relatively easy to find and the left over parts would help a few people.

I guess my point is, the only acceptable swaps for a vector is another vector, everyone wins.

I see you cut out a big portion of my reply. So youre saying you can drive all the way here to Reno to pick up a POS Tempest, but you dont want to waste your time offering to save this nice cabinet and offer your shitty cabinet in exchange? Youre bashing and insulting him for converting a nice cabinet, but you arent willing to offer your perfect restoration/conversion candidate thats sitting dead in your garage?

Hm. Well, whatever...
