I purchased an Area 51 machine and HD went bad.

I am trying to use a MAME CHD, and CHDMAN to create an Image using an adapter that plugs directly into the motherboard.... I keep getting about 1/2 through the extract and it craps out write errors... tried two different new 4gb compact flash cards and get errors at different hunks about 1/2 through on both... any ideas?

I've also read that the Area 51's dont like media over 2GB, is this true ? Finding 2GB Compact Flash media locally might be troublesome....

Thanks
Kags

Make sure you have the very latest CHDMAN.

I tried this a few months ago and it was crapping out on me. I found a later version and it went fine.

Thanks for the response. I have tried a few different versions (the latest I could find was .131 I think) and have downloaded the mame .137 source code, but it looks uncompiled to me... it lists "chdman.c" any links to the most current version of CHDMAN? or an idiots guide to getting the source code into something I might be able to use...

Thanks

I have had some problems getting this to work after I had it working about 6 months ago. I used cdman83 when I first copied, then when I tried it recently (same hardware, CF, and PC) it gave those write errors you talked about.

I upgraded to a newer version and it still errored on me too. I put the CF card in anyway to see if it would boot and it worked perfectly. I don't like the idea that it errored though, at some point I am going to try again to get a clean copy of it.

2Gb flash cards can be found at Micro Center or over on Craigslist.

Kags,

Make sure you are using a 4Gb card and not a fake card. There are a lot of counterfeit CF cards out there - especially on eBay.

The problem I have is that it errors and then stops... so I get half the image... no go there although I havent tried it...

RJ - I got one card from Frys and one from NewEgg so I am pretty certain they are genuine. I will check CL and I also think that Wolf Camera may have some...

Chdman

I have some instructions on my site. (below)

If you're having issues with the copy it could be the PC having troubles with the USB connection, the HD or the compact flash adapter.

If you can try the same process on a friends machine.

You need to run "IIRC" chdman -info
You need to be concerened with the logical size not physical. Just because that CHD might be 2 gig the logical size can be 4 gig. Ensure your CF card is as big or bigger than the logical size.

Also some games have issues with using CF cards ADAPTERS so don;t be suprised that once you do get it dumped down to CF that you might not have a game that'll boot anyway.

And watch the speed of the CF cards. Cheap, slow ones can give problems.

If I remember right you need a new card. If its been formatted for windows before it wont work. Its been a while since I have done one but never had any problems.

Nah,

I've used cards that had been formatted on my Canon DSLR and on Windows. The trick is to unplug the card and NOT do a directory command on it or open it in Windows to view it as a folder.

Those actions can screw it up.
