Hello,

I just picked up a 27'' 31 khz VGA monitor. I believe the monitor is EYGO due to a sticker on the tube, my google-fu didnt return anything useful. I heard eygo's are just wei-ya? The problem i am having is the screen flickers really bad, like its blanking...i can get a video in a little bit, once i put the chassis back on, but when i looked at the chassis, on the neckboard, there is a spark, that is flashing at the same rhythm as the flashing on the screen. The component is at SG701...the third pic. Im showing my nooby-ness, because ive never seen something like that spark on the neckboard, it looks like an voltage arc, is this supposed to happen? What component is that, it looks like a resistor, but ive never seen one thats see thru like that, and usually resistors are marked as R on the PCB, like the rest of the resistors...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Anyway, here are some pics.

That's referred to as a Spark Gap, hence the SG designation.
Yes, it should "spark" like that. (inside the glass that is)

The monitor should NOT be sparking across the Spark Gap. That's there for overvoltage protection, so if it's sparking, something's wrong. Possibly something bad on the chassis sending too high voltage to one of the pins, or possibly a defective tube shorting one of the high voltage pins to a lower voltage one.

i see! Thanks for the reply, so that probably has nothing to do with the flashing huh?

That probably has everything to do with the flashing... I don't think that's a very common chassis, so you'll probably have to troubleshoot yourself a little bit. I'd personally suspect the tube first, which is easy to check if you know someone w/ a CRT tester/rejuvenator. If there's another spark gap on the board, you could also try swapping them to verify the spark gap isn't bad, though I wouldn't expect it to be.

Thanks for the reply, i might know someone with a rejuvenator, there doesnt appear to be any more spark gaps on the board...

What would i be looking for on the tube? sorry, im a bit clueless after capkit and component replacements.

If it was a problem with the tube, I think it'd show up in one of the leakage tests... but if the rejuvenator is hooked up, you might as well run it through all the tests.

You do know people with rejuvenators. Dave and I both have one as do many other locals. Rejuvenators are pretty easy to use and simple to understand. What you really need is a schematic/manual for your chassis so we can identify what we should be looking for on the chassis. I'll look around...

Thanks for the info everyone :)

@Oryk: Thanks man, nice to have locals with equipment! YEah, ive been trying to find the manual for this thing with no luck :(
