Whoever it was I spoke with concerning this, they were right. The trailer for it was much better than the actual program. I found myself yawning getting onward toward the late middle of it when it all started to seem to degenerate from the arcade scene to being a high score show.
Anyone else know of any good 80's arcade programs that aired? I thought there was one that aired a few years ago on G2, when G2 was any good or was it history channel?

have to chime in with a different opinion and say that I really enjoyed chasing ghosts. I watched it 3 times over the years. I'm curious if anyone knows of any other arcade type documentaries (other than king of kong and hi score) I didn't find much when I went searching.

No, its not great, but its only 50 minutes long or so and was somewhat interesting.

What version of Chasing Ghosts did you see? The one that's on all the torrent sites is NOT the final edit, and probably shouldn't be taken as indicating the quality of the real film. The one that was on Showtime was the final edit.

I agree about the Showtime. I loved this film. I have the torrent version and the music was a HUGE part of the experience for me. I recorded it on Showtime and there was no soundtrack, it was really lame in that format.

i saw the screener copy and enjoyed it quite a bit.

of course, i watched it with some other arcade geeks and we'd all seen KoK which i think helps a bit a as there is quite a bit of overlap between "characters."

TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball was really good. If you have any interest in the modern arcade scene, I Got Next is a pretty decent documentary about the Street Fighter community, and it's a free download. Neither has the broad appeal or production values of The King of Kong, but that's a hard act to follow. :)

I'm not sure what to compare it with. Only watched the version I watched. But essentially it ended up in the end being pretty much about the guy that kept track of the scores.

high score was painfully boring, i love arcade games but this doc was more about one guy and his machine resettting itself over and over than anything else. doesnt even get the record, the best part is his prancing at the end.

chasing ghosts was great! in this case, the screener is better than the final product. it was like king of kong but with a wider viewpoint covering all classic arcade games. i have watched it about a dozen times, i love the old guys who reunite to play bezerk and cant get it working, call chris ayra a monkey...

I gotta throw in some love for Chasing Ghosts as well. An actual documentary as opposed to King of Kong(although I enjoy it as well). It is a toss-up for me between Todd Rogers(bedroom full of Spiders and Fans!) and Robert Mruczek(His art collection!) over who is most fascinating to observe. And I am still waiting for the release of Walter Day "In a Mellow Mood". I haven't seen a version without all of the period music, but I would imagine it would lose alot of its' impact without "Space Age Love Song"..

please tell me the edited showtime version got rid of all the Porn...not appropriate for little kids and shouldn't be in this documentary. Save it for a Documentary on middle age nerds that masturbate a lot and still live with their parents.

yea, no kidding, I did like that part. Berzerk isn't exactly a game where you just pack up the boardset and run over to someone's house and expect it to fire up. Lots of patience with that one. After just completing my berzerk repair I was very interested in that part. Who knows how many beeps they got? :D

Showtime version doesn't have the porn. It's also not Space Age Love song...I thought for months that it actually was, but if you listen closely, it's very similar, but not actually the song. Made me a little disappointed. I'm interested in the torrent version though...not that I've ever done that before, but I can figure out how.

I DVRed the showtime version of Chasing Ghosts. I've watched it 3 or 4 times. The original cut had porn in it? I have a hard time seeing how that fit in. Like, "I just got the high score on Joust!" /cut screen to lady sucking off a horse.

One of the judges (the one with the cat that lives with his mom/parents, collects "art" (read: porn).

And don't forget about Roy Shilt talking about having Madonna's love child and him servicing various women and men. lol.... also the judge(Robert) had the Art porn. says he paid $13,000 for it by selling stock in (his) company even though he lives with mom and dad. its like Brian Kuh retiring at the tender age of 32....lol
