Centuri Phoenix Cabinet And Sega/Gremlin Astro Blaster Cabinet... Are They The Same?

Just picked up a gutted Phoenix cab over the weekend for $25.

Needs some work obviously but generally solid. Now for my question. Is this cabinet and the Sega/Gremlin style cabinet for Astro Blaster (with the woodgrain sides) pretty much the same? To me they appear very similar. Anyone? Thanks in advance y'all

A bit similar but different in most ways - IMHO.

You're right, the more I look at it. I like the Sega/Gremlin cab a bit more. But since I waited around for probably six months to a year scouting around my local area for one in decent shape, I said to hell with it and went for this Phoenix cab instead.

Good grab...I could so use that cab!!!

Yeah it's in pretty solid shape so I'm happy. Def worth $25!

I'm learning a lot on the KLOV boards so thank you to everyone here. In fact, the guy who sold me the Phoenix cab in Cleveland raved about you guys for about ten minutes when I went to pick it up.

I'm an old-school video game junkie and a former video game magazine editor. I've been very much into gaming since the days of 2600.

Here's a question for you. There are a few spots on the side panels (textured woodgrain, not smooth) with chunks missing. How in the world do you guys deal with restoring that? If I buy woodgrain vinyl it's not going to look right I don't think. I doubt it will match in color either. Then to get it to "sync-up" with the surrounding woodgrain... !

If I understand correct what you are looking to do:

Find suitable wood gain veneer (match for a restoration or just something you like), remove what's there, repair the wood with Bondo, sand, and apply
replacement veneer.

That's pretty much it to do it right. I can not necessarily see being able to match the (fake) grain to graft in a partial piece. Eve if you couls I am sure the line woudl be visable.

Damn that's a lot of work.

Just tell everyone about how the cabinet saved your life from the bank shootout down the street when you were picking it up and that you'll always keep it looking just like that to help you remember what could have happened that day......(almost) nobody cares about dings on the sides.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that is clever and funny. I bet you could make up great excuses for your wife if you ever get in trouble.
