OK, after dragging my centipede (with no feet) out of storage for some electrical repairs I ended up breaking the formica sheet on the front of the game along the bottom. I used a straight edge to cut a straight line for the repair, but what would you guys recommend: Replace the whole formica sheet, use some bondo and paint, kickplate molding?

The rest of the machine is actually in good conditon.

Replace the whole formica sheet, you'll never be happy with just paint. I thought those were just vinyl sticker? That should be easy.

You may be correct, I believe it was a sticker as well. It looks like the formica might have been done at some later date.

I would go with formica. Relatively inexpensive and it will look so much nicer. More durable than vinyl also.

All pretty good ideas. I will not be keeping the game, but would like it to look original. I will probably go with formica. Lowes didn't have any black, so I will continue my search.

Yeah, I had to special order mine at the local hardware store. Wasn't cheap, but I was able to get a good match. I think it was Wilsonart. The best way to make the edges look right without removing the front panel of the game, is to cut a blank of chipboard stock exactly the same dimensions as your front panel and then use a router to cut the formica to those exact dimensions. You don't need to cut the coindoor hole until you've installed it on the game. If you try to use a utility knife you'll end up with rough edges.

I did Black Laminate on my Asteroids Deluxe kickplate, as that was what was original on my machine. You can see it chipped and broken here:

I too waited til the laminate was set on the machine to cut out the coindoor. A router or laminate trimmer works wonders. Yes you do have to custom order the black laminate in most cases, though you can order a 3x5 sheet instead of 4x8 if you wanna save a few bucks.
