So as im getting this up and going im running into a couple things. First off, how do i get it to save my high scores? When ever it is shut off, it comes back with the previous high scores from when i got it.

Next when i open the coin door it shuts the machine off. The white on and off switch is mounted so its on when the door is shut and off when you open it. What can i do with this?

Thanks,

Centipede should save the top 3 scores automatically, if not there might be a problem with your board. I do not know of a high score upgrade kit that will save all of the scores. I believe that the "Multi-pede" kit saves all the scores but it runs on Millipede hardware.

The coin door switch is often called an interlock switch. It is a safety switch to protect people from accidently touching a live wire when the cabinet is open (there should be one on the back door also). If you want to turn the game on when the door is open, just pull the switch button out and it will lock in place. If you want to keep the game from going off when you open the door, the best thing to do is to move the switch to the side and leave it in the on position. Alternatively, some people just put a piece of electrical tape over it to keep the button pushed down and leave the switch on the door. Of course, it is not too difficult to remove the switch altogether and splice the wires together. Just remember though, it is designed to be a safety feature.

Edit- forgot to add that there is also a free play setting if you want to avoid opening the coin door to add credits. It may be wise to read over the manual, you can find a copy here: http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Atari_Kee/Centipede/Centipede_TM-182_2nd_Printing.pdf

Turn on the self test switch. This will put the game in test mode. Push the fire button and the player 1 and 2 start buttons at the same time. Exit test mode by turning off the test switch. See page 7 of the manual (page 15 of the pdf I posted above) for more information.

Ok so I'm having the same issue with saving high scores on my Centipede. Is there nothing to replace that will save 8 of the high scores past instead of just the top 3?
I guess I will have to stop trying to beat my wife's lower scores if I can't do any better then the top 3. (I have the top 3)
That's just not right. Not right at all.
Can anyone add any advice as to how to make the high score work " as it should".
Thanks
Just not right!

If the score save does not work at all, you can replace the EAROM (don't know the chip location). This happened on my Dig Dug when I first got it. Fortunately, I had access to other Dig Dug boards and used the EAROM from one of those.

top 3 scores save as they should, so everything is good I guess.
I don't think I will end up going the Multi-pede route as XXI21 says, it gets expensive.
Too expense for me.
Thanks for all the input.

Damn, And I thought I made real progress with my 42,XXX high score.
Oh well, the wife still hasn't beat it. :)
It's been 25+ years since I played it and we've only had it working for a few weeks, so there's still time even though I'm an old guy.
Kudos to ya'

As long as you can save a high score , i wouldnt worry about altering it for the top 8 ,once you get half good , you wont make it down that low anyway , you just dont need more than 3

Hopefully this thread will motivate me to work on the monitor in my Centipede this weekend and see if I can get it going. I always sucked at it but I hope I get better at it after I finally get the machine working.

Well, my wife loves this game more than I do, although I do like it, so just having it working for her makes it all worth while.
(I think it's getting more use now than it did when it was out in the wild).
Too bad I can't charge her for each game. My retirement would be set. :)
So in short, sandmanx, if you are married, maybe that will put a fire under ya'.
BTW, wife is out here playing it as I write this.....

centipede screen tip

Hopefully this thread will motivate me to work on the monitor in my Centipede this weekend and see if I can get it going. I always sucked at it but I hope I get better at it after I finally get the machine working.

Make sure you adjust the screen to maximum size , i was playing this for ages and everytime the centipede got to the bottom i died , my screen was not quite full size .

When it is , there is some space underneath you [ i WAS on the bottom ] , so segments can go under you , and work their way back up .

This might of been a B+ issue , as that does expand the screen , but let someone comment on this before you go near the B+ voltage adj .

Can you please explain this a little further? I don't follow what your issue was.
