How hard is it to install a switching power supply in an otherwise original Centipede?

There is 'Pede I can get for fairly cheap, but it needs a power supply. My neighbor has a switcher in his Jamma cab that he isn't using...

The original ARII power supply in Atari games, including Centipede, handles not only power but audio as well. You'd need to still have it in place for audio but you probably could cut the power wires coming off it that go to the pcb and attach them to a switcher. I don't think Centipede requires more than the standard +5 and +12 to run, but I may be wrong. It's pretty easy to install the rebuild kit djw90 mentioned and would look better than modding it with a switcher IMHO.

The rebuild kit you speak of is the AC power supply rebuild kit, with BIG BLUE, bridge rectifier and some connectors? Or is it a different kit for the ARII ?

I am unfamiliar with Atari stuff.

Your looking at the wrong kit, though if your fuse block looks pretty nasty that kit is also not a bad idea. Replacing Big Blue is also a good idea if yours is original. You need this one:

Atari A/R II-02 to -06 Repair Kit (Caps+Q2/3/8/9+R30) $12.00

Bob also has the Big Blue for $12 I think.

So that will require removing a bunch of resistors and caps, then replacing them? That doesn't sound like an easy task for a beginner!!

it's easy. no monitor, so no discharging required. it'll go quick. just get a spare junk board and practice soldering and desoldering. you'll pick it up pretty quick.
