Hi -

I've started work on my Centipede control panel rebuild. The control panel had the usual wear spot around the rollerball. I rebuilt the rollerball, with rollers and a new ball, ordered new aluminum cones for the start buttons and a new fire button.

I've removed the old overlay and stripped the control panel down to bare metal with Citristrip which worked amazingly well. I've washed and rubbed down the metal with steel wool.

I have an oem overlay - has to be pretty old, but I peeled up a corner and the adhesive appears to be intact.

My questions are :

1) should I sand the metal control panel before spraypainting it.

2) should I apply some spray adhesive or contact cement on the metal control panel before applying the new overlay?

3) any tips or tricks to help line things up and prevent bubbles?

Pics forthcoming..

THanks!

Hey there...

1) You are going to need to get all the old adhesive off first. There are lots of different methods people recommend for this - Citrus Strip, WD 40, adhesive remover, etc... Search here for the many threads about this and you'll find people rooting for all these different methods.

After I get the adhesive off, I usually sand it a bit. Painting is optional but will help if any areas end up being exposed near the edges.

2) No. The overlay you are putting on should already have adhesive

Thanks!

All the previous paint and adhesive is off - Citristrip gel did a phenomenal job for that.

My only concern with not using additional adhesive is that the one I'm putting on is original and probably 30 yrs old, and I can see some bubbling on the backing already in some spots.

Great tip link - I'll definitely use a hairdryer for the bends.
