I met a gentleman yesterday that is selling a centipede that has been sitting in his old garage for 20 years. I went out to his place to take a look. It doesn't have the back on it so it is very dirty inside. Probably a bad decision but we plugged it in to see if it worked. The screen came on. It started out with a bunch of vertical lines moving across a white screen. After a few seconds, the screen was all white. He took his finger off the switch in the back and it turned off. I am new to arcade repair as evident by some of my other posts but I am learning. What are your initial thoughts?

Does it just need to be cleaned or are there bigger problems that I need to be concerned about before taking on this project?

The trackball would need to be replaced probably. It was pretty herky, jerky. The side art was there but it was starting to flake on the sides.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You've got bigger problems.

Likely the power / regulator board (commonly called the ARII board) needs to be rebuilt.

Monitor seems to be OK, since you have raster when you power the game on.

Your issue lies with the game board or the ARII board.

Time to check voltages on the power supply...

I had a Centipede that had a solid yellow screen when I got it. It ended up being a board issue. There is a test mode switch near the coin door, flip that and see if the test menu shows up.

But do check your voltages, that's always a good starting point.

You could try cleaning the edge connectors on the PCB.

But I would guess something sitting that long probably has a power supply issue.

I'd offer $50 for it.

You didn't say if you could hear gameplay, or whether the start buttons were blinking (they blink on Centipede right?), or whether you tried coining up if neither of the other two.

At least the monitor powers up. It probably needs a rebuild and the brightness turned down - maybe a flyback - but that's half the battle...
