Just picked up a Centipede and it has a display issue that I can't seem to make go away. I ran the system test on the board and I am getting 10 beeps which indicates a problem with the N5 Ram chip. The game plays fine but I have random letters across the screen. Is this problem caused by the defective RAM chip or do I have another problem as well? Never really attacked an Atari board repair before and I figured I could rely on some of the local Atari experts for some much needed advice. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Centipede Issues

I plan to change the RAM Chip later this week but is that the cause of my display problem or another problem that I am facing?

It;s PROBABLY the ram chip. BUT. Go ahead and change out the big blue while you are in there. That thing will cause all kinds of bizare behavior because of its age. In fact, big blue should be the first step.

Replace the bad playfield RAM. If the display is still messed up try swapping in a known-good Pokey.
