Centipede Graphic Issue

I will try to explain this the best I can. The game plays just fine, but when you get to the 4th level screen or so, my missiles are black and so is the background, so you can't see the missiles flying. One level after that my guy is black and the only thing you can see is the red eyes and red missiles.

It seems like an outer border color is missing, like the outer border of the sprites are black, thus blending into the black background. It only happens on two of the alternating levels. I am going to read though my manuals to see if I can diagnose it, but thought I would check here since I can't find anything similar on the net.

I don't know about the inner working of Centipede, but I would imagine that either the ROM that holds the color tables/palettes is broken, or the index that is looking into the table is messed up before it gets to the table.
 
Yeah- or there is a bad color PROM.

If you go into self test, one of the CP buttons switches the pallete around. You would have to have MAME up or a sister machine to know if the sequence is whacked or something because some of the background/foreground combinations result in 'hidden' objects.
