I bought a Centipede a while back and it has this CPO on it....

Is this one of the knock off cpo's or a a different version? All the new ones being made or reproduced are all different.

Thanks,

-Mike

Wow, never seen that one. I have seen the Willis one with the big Centipede on it though. Wonder if they made that one too?

I haven't seen that one before either but it's definitely not original.

You can get new ones. Check Quarter Arcade or arcadeshop

Here is mine with the overlay from QA

I never quite understood the Centipede Control Panel. Why is the button all the way up top? The graphics make it look like it should go right in the center of the left mushroom.

I agree, Funny thing is, I bought TWO of these games, BOTH had that control panel....

I actually like it better, but have not seen anyone making new ones...

I sold the first game I bought, and had put the other cpo on it. The pic is actually of the first one I bought. The Second one is in my garage...

So I wonder whats going on with the cpo...

First cab was bought in Milpitas area, second was bought from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

Thanks,

-Mike

The overlay was designed for a joystick and two button, but they scrapped the idea and added the trackball. I believe it would have been the basic Dig Dug panel; the center mushroom would have had the stick and then a button on either side.

I've noticed that too. Perhaps the artwork was produced first before they realized that ergonomically the button was better placed higher?

Baconsm, Not sure why that explains the button is above the mushroom instead of in it like it would of been if there was a joystick. Maybe I'm just not following you?

Yea, I guess that's still in question. My answer only explains why there are the 3 mushrooms and the marked area for the button were originally there but not why they moved the button. Maybe once they put the trackball in they no longer cared about placement, or as someone suggested it wasn't ergonomic or uncomfortable to have the button on the same plane? I would love to know the entire story too.
Funny thing is the blue and green CPO above looks like it belongs to the cabinet more than the real one.

+1! If you place your hand on the control panel as if to use the button where it looks like it is supposed to be, your wrist falls over the edge of the CP. By moving the button up, it allows you to rest your wrist on the CP comfortably while holding the fire button down. My guess is that they discovered this during testing before release and moving the button up was simply the most cost effective way to address as opposed to completely redoing the already completed overlay. This is purely a guess on my part, but for those of you that own Centipedes, go home and try what I say and post back as to whether or not you agree...

+1 .

Yes, ergonomics is much better higher.

Note that the artwork looks like it was intended -- the top line from the burst of lines is longer isn't it? -- pointing directly at the button.

As far as the OP -- that's a Willis bootleg overlay IIRC. Nothing Atari produced. I've seen it a few times. Check BasementArcade -- he's got lots of pics.
