Centipede Cocktail Control Panel Wood - Painted? Vinyl-ed?

My Centipede cocktail has seen a lot of work at this point, and I am considering completing the control panel area, but I am not sure what it is covering the wood.

Is it paint? Is it some sort of vinyl or plastic covering? What would fixing or replacing this entail? Would I have to take the machine apart and re-glue all the wood together, or would this be relatively easy?

I've looked for threads about restoring this game or vinyl/plastics, but I mostly get results about replacing artwork.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Yeah, most all Atari games were built with particleboard/MDF and covered in vinyl artwork with a thick glue.

Are you referring to repairing the vinyl or repairing the wood? I cant tell from your picture.

I'm looking at replacing the vinyl. The wood is in pretty good shape, despite how it looks in the picture. If necessary, I could patch it up the nicks with some bondo, I guess.

I've restored 3 of these cocktails, actually I'm in the middle of the third restoration. The vinyl on the control panel "paddles" seems to dry out and get brittle....then it starts to chip and flake.

I had leftover vinyl from another project that I purchased from This Old Game that seems to blend in well and I used it on the first two restorations. However, you need to order a minimum of 12 ft. I'm tempted to sand, prime and paint this one black....that way, if it gets dinged in the future it is easier to repaint than repair vinyl.

How do you apply this to the control panel area? Do you have to take the whole thing apart?

Yes, I removed the control panels....but I did this for a few reasons. First, I needed to replace the vinyl. Second, I needed to replace the control panel overlays. Third, my machine is...was....dirty and really needed to be cleaned from top to bottom.

I've basically tore down the entire machine.....this is a total restore, I have (or will) cleaned, painted, polished the entire game. All the pieces of the metal leg framing were sanded to remove the rust, primed and painted. I even have new end caps for the legs.

It should look new...or very close to new, when I'm done. :)

I've done this as well for the inside parts, but for the outside (like in the picture), did you take the wood pieces apart and then wood glue them back together? It looks difficult to re-vinyl the outside area without doing so. Or did you just cut it to the shape of the outer part of the control panel?

Thanks!

There is no need to remove the control panel "paddles"....it is not difficult to apply the vinyl and trim it down with an exacto knife.
