Centipede cocktail cabinet need some help

I just talked to a fellow about a centipede cocktail it looks to be in fair shape but when you power it up it just clicks and you get a redish line down the middle of the screen.

The clicking seems to be coming from the side opposite the main board behind the coin mech area.

Any ideas as to where to start as far beginning diagnosis?

Thanks!

sounds like the ar2 (power supply) might need to be rebuilt. check your +5 volts on the board to ensure you're getting that. know a guy with a black widow with a bad ar2 that did the same thing.

Coils

It is the lockout coils on the coin door clicking. Like Cleverj Said, It is a voltage issue. Either a failing AR or a connection issue.

Or it could be the coin counters cycling, indicating either low +5V or a problem with the main cpu board. Or it could be waiting for the Sharks or Jets to make their move.

LOL well we will know soon since I'm going to send it down to ya to check out for me :D

Pulled the boards today pretty clean compared to the rest of the cab but that doesn't mean much.

Looked in the bottom and there was a cap just laying there, great, pulled the monitor and it was off that board you could see where it burn a little so its off also! Down to Orlando and Carl Blessing at Allgood to have him give it a once over.

Bit_slicer board should go out in tommorows mail.

I'm up a buck fifty in quarters on a positive note though LOL

Well I got the power board back from bit slicer today it looks great

Hooked it all back up (minus the monitor its still out) but still no joy :( just that annoying clicking, tracked it down to the coin counter it was intermittent so unplugged it and the clicking stopped.

I have a solid red led on the main board and I noticed the start buttons are now lit, checked the board connections and that did nothing, so what would be the next step?

Thanks again for all the suggestions I do appreciate it!

My warlords is doing the same thing with the coin counter, it just starts cycling. I just unplugged it as well.

I didn't think it was related to my problem with garbage screen, but I am interested to know why it's happening.

Hey John with the rebuilt AR-II installed can you re-measure the voltages on the main cpu board? You should see test lugs for +5V, -5V, +12V, +15V, and -15V. Measure them against a GND lug on the main board.

I will do that after work tomorrow and let you know!

Someone mentioned the player lights both being on could be a bad sign also so this board might be making a trip down your way soon also LOL

Ok 3 meters later I'm back LOL

My good auto ranging craftsman meter just went nutty and wont read properly so I pulled out a HF one, plugged in the wall and there was a pop and where the lead plugs in to the meter smokes and turns black oops.
So went to another meter none in town cept wal mart cheapy but I remember I had about a dozen HF in storage yanked one out and went at it again.

All the voltages looked good except for the 5 volt it was low it seemed to fluctuate around 4 only steady read I got was 4 volts on the board the 22 volts was running about 24 if that makes a difference.

Unplugged the lower wires from the coin mechs and plugged back in the counter and the clicking started but then quit.

There looks to be a solenoid on the coin mechs in the middle that have seen better days what type are they?

I will check the test switch position again but no I have not been able to start a game.

Thanks for the help guys!

+4V is too low. Can you try turning up the +5V on the AR board?

Another thing to try with power OFF measure the resistance between the +5V and GND test lugs. If it measures close to 0 Ohms then you might have a short on the board somewhere.

With the game running, the bottlecap transistor in the middle of the heat sink on the AR shouldn't be too hot to touch.

Ok got the 5 volt issue resolved but I am still having issues.

I got 2 player lights lit and the one player is flickering tried to coin up but nothing will start.

I unplugged the coin mech at the bottom but not the lock out coil that might be an issue going to try that and see if that is an issue.

The counter is back clicking then stops after a few so that is better I guess LOL

Thanks again to Bit_Slicer for showing the error of my ways
