So I obtained a Centipede Cabaret machine. I've got it mostly working now and I'm wondering what to do about it.

The Atari Cabarets always seemed like the little cabinets that could to me. They were efficient and functional and that's what operators needed but I think they fall short. (insert rimshot here) For one, Atari seemed to cheap out on lighting for the majority of the cabs--that I'm gonna work on later. Second, I never much liked woodgrain sides on any cabaret. It's boring and 70s looking.

I ordered the reproduction side-art for the cabaret and I've seen one application where it is adhered directly to the woodgrain sides. But I would kind of prefer it to look more like its big brother.

This cabinet isn't a perfect specimen but it's in pretty good shape--there are a couple of dings in the sides that I could fill with wood putty. So I'm considering white oil-based semi-gloss enamel for the sides to get rid of the unsightly woodgrain. ;) I think it would be cooler than the decal on top of woodgrain.

Any opinions?

Wood grain for me : it's so 70's relative for me and not so bad looking in fact :) :

If the woodgrain is in good shape, I'd keep it. But if it's all banged up along the edges, I'd paint. I have a neo geo 2 slot in the smaller woodgrain cab, and my plan there is to paint it. I don't really go for the whole woodgrain thing.

I'd go white or black instead of woodgrain. That is what I plan to do eventually. Woodgrain vinyl was just a cheap replacement for real wood veneer. White would be nice on the cabaret since it matches its big brother.

I feel the same way about the Midway cabarets. I usually replace the old, beat up woodgrain vinyl with a textured black vinyl and it looks stunning. Just look how nice Williams cabarets look with their paintjobs instead of vinyl.

I can't decide on my Asteroids Deluxe, either. I think it would look sweet with the art on white sides, but I don't want to remove the original woodgrain.

I think the only reasonable option is to get a second one so you can have one each way.

This is hilarious.

Sides are dinged up enough that I'll need to putty in two spots in the middle of each and the bottom edge is a little jacked up too--not terrible--but not great.

Nice cabaret cabs, guys.

Well I patched up the sides and painted it white. Waiting for the enamel to gas out and I'll apply the art.

Since the Centipede art was offered after the units were purchased I'm wondering if Atari had specifications as to it's placement or if it was completely up to the operator. Not that it matters since my cabinet is no longer "stock" but both applications I've seen have had the artwork lower than I would have placed it.

Wow! You painted that cabinet just because of those tiny chips in the wood grain???

Looks great!!

I doubt I would have done that, I probably would have used some wood filler and a light and dark stain pen to match the grain.

I liked it much better with the wood grain.
It does look nice but I have to go with keeping original. :)

As long as you're happy, that's all that matters!
