CAX Observations and Feedback

The guy with the Guitar thing was annoying. I think I enjoyed the Jehovahs Witness' more than him...

CAX was fantastic again this year with the most games and floor space of any of the 4 events I have attended. A couple insights from talking to some of the guys that help to put this together.

1. The back corner 1/8 of that room belongs to the convention center not the hotel meaning space is essentially maxed at this location.

2. Game set up is limited by location of available power. Games were being turned away Friday night because of no more power.

As such I will only briefly comment on setup. It is too bad CAX can't get the whole room and put a ring of games around the perimeter then an isle then smaller rings of back to back games with an isle opening in the middle of each of the 4 sides. Then locate the vendors in the center.

Just my 2c worth on this... I actually helped out with setup for most of Friday and, although I wasnt involved in the actual overall "grand plan", I did help out with reorganizing quite a bit during the day and late in to the night. Unfortunately the power was running seriously close to max in some sections which caused a lot of organizational headaches and we ended up turning away a whole trailr of games, good games too, late on Friday night as there simply wasnt any more available floor space. The combination of power requirements (theres an electrician who walks around and monitors all the areas) and the necessary "10 foot gap" between rows / tables etc really limits what you can do.

Some of the guys worked till 3AM Saturday morning to get everything in place and running! For me I am just super appreciative of everyone's hard work and the fact that the games were, for the most part, working the entire weekend mostly problem free.

Roll on CAX 2012!!!

It's a fine testament to what the organizers have made this show. So big they have to turn stuff away. That beings a smile to my face. I wonder what other locations might work better?

I actually did not mind the guy on the guitar . I was more bothered by the creeper in the trenchcoat ...

This was my second show - I missed last year. I was very impressed by the organization and quality of games. Many more pins than I remember from last time.

Only two important observations - The curvy game layout was a real concern for me and I was surprised that the fire marshal allowed it. It made it difficult to find your way out in an emergency. Almost like a maze. Although boring, the standard rows of games would be safer for making a quick exit.

Second was that the bar closed way too early. Not that I wanted to get drunk but more that we were thirsty and looking for a place to get something to drink and enjoy each others' company to talk about our favorite subject.

Thank you to everyone involved - I plan to make this an annual trip.

Yeah, its strange the bar closes as early as it does especially with many of us there and willing to spend money on drinks. I think we were down there until 1A Friday night, and 1A Sat night. The liquor store saved us many a times.

1st time at CAX for a friend and I

we are both 30 years old, fond memories of arcades when we were in our childhood and early teens. we were both surprised to see a lot of older guys there, we expected a crowd of people of similar age to us... but wow lots of 40, 50 year old dudes! all good, but was surprising! and cool!

i really liked the bass player dude. the music was perfectly fitting for the scene, and it was great to hear an instrument that makes a different sound that what you normally hear. bravo to the 11 string guitar dude! he was a bit loud, thats for sure, but i REALLY like my bass loud... if my chest isnt vibrating enough to make it hard to breathe - its not loud enough ! hahaha

the automated band machines were pretty cool, especially when my buddy and i realized it was playing the Star Wars cantina music! very cool! i dont remember any whistle thing, sounds like was fortinate enough to not be around when that thing was going! I played a lot of Lunar Landing, which was right by those machines

the dead ends didnt bother us so much, so long as it meant more games on the floor. was disappointing to see BOTH "Tanks" games were not functional in one way or another, along with a pong like game which was really cool, but again malfunctioned by mid saturday. that, and games that it was impossible or not easy to figure out how to credit them and play them!!! there needs to be (better?) checks of games when they come in... do the fully function? can you add credits easily (big red button in obvious location)? basic stuff like that was lacking. granted it was a problem on only a handful of machines, but thats a lot of floor space wasted that other (fully functioning) games could have been there

i have a feeling that CAX is going to get even more popular as the word further gets out... we are going to need a bigger venue (with superior power supply!) in not too long.....

i currently own a Race Drivin' my goal is to source another one and link them, and hopefully bring them next year. the Hard Drivin' Airborne got a lot of play, the other 2 player racing games were ALWAYS packed - and i'd think that Race Drivin' (especially 2 of them linked) would be a suuuuper cool and perfect edition to CAX. wish me luck !!!! ...... and who was that guy who was the top scorer for Airborne? oh yea, that was me! lolz anyone beat my ~173,000 on Sunday? as of midnight saturday i still held 1st thru 3rd of the high scores... :D

my friend was a bit disappointed/surprised at the lack of Sega games on the floor. no Afterburner, no Altered Beast, that kinda thing. and I didnt see any NEO GEO machines. not a big gripe, but woulda been cool.

overall, a very fun and cool experience. my buddy and i will be back next year FOR SURE.

Let me rephrase, I didnt mind the music, but the fact that it was so loud and reverberating in my ears, I wanted to avoid that area. I felt sorry for the This Old Game booth...

i have to agree with the lack of Sega games , this was also my first trip to cax and i expected to at least see a Afterburner . Oh well , maybe next year . Actually there was one neo-geo for sale on the floor .

games I'd like to see

Sega:
Afterburner CP, Outrun (oving), Space Harrier, Virtua On, Radiant Silvergun and a Datona Twin.

Capcom:
GnG, D&D, MvC2, Puzzle Fighter and Punisher

Taito:
Operation Thunderbolt, Elevator Action Returns, ICB
Maybe next year I'll bring OT... That's alot of wear to put on my machine however...

SNK
A lineup of Neo Geo machines with as many different carts as possible. That 6 slot and the 2 slot Gold didn't do it. Some guys were always playing KOF. Magician Lord and Cyberlip don't do it for me.

other random games;
In The Hunt, Outfoxies

One downside to the curves was, for pinballs, if a machine got the middle of the wide end of the curve it became kind of a play-space issue. Poor Firepower in that one armpit next to BlackKnight and Eightball Deluxe. You were very much in BK/EB player's space if you decided to step up to that Firepower.

Outfoxies would be great for next year. I've seen, but never actually played.

One suggestion I overheard was...and it isn't gonna be popular...ditch most of the cocktail area for more space. ??
