CAX 2012. When do we get to start talking about it?

Are there multiples of the popular cabs, like Ms. Pac, DK, etc.?

Usually they have several of the "really popular ones..." And/or, you can play those on multis if multis don't drive you insane...

Is there going to be a DK tournament this year?

How long does it take for a good player to play donkey kong? 2 or 3 hours? more?

When they did the tron contest a couple of years back, I think they realized that games where people can play for hours at a time is not a good game for a contest.

Around 2.5 hours. But I thought they did it last year where each player gets an hour max.

Mark Alpiger has run the video tournaments for the past few years. If I remember correctly, he did have a 1 hour limit on gameplay as he was well aware that some of the games he choose for the contest were "marathonable."

Mark won't be able to make it out this year for the fun due to personal reasons so Richie Knucklez and Paul Dean have graciously stepped up to the proverbial plate to run a video contest of their own on Pole Position.

The details of their contest that they designed are up on the website under the "Tourneys" link:

Each entrant will get a signed Pole Position poster that do look very cool indeed :) ! And of course there are a lot of other prizes being offered.

Oh, cool.

I hope everything's going okay with Mark Alpiger.

I won't go into his reasons as I respect his privacy of course, but suffice it to say that he's fine otherwise.

I'll miss seeing him this year myself, but more than likely he'll be back next year :) .

2 years ago when they had the tron contest there was not a time limit. I played for an hour or so, and called Paul Dean over and told him I was going to kill the rest of my lives since I thought I had it won.

Well in steps someone else and takes down my score. (400,000 or so). I'm watching the clock and this guy is at 550,000 and there is only about an hour left.
He unexpectedly dies 3 times in 5 minutes, I jump right back on and break his score with a few minutes to spare, lol.

It's one of my proudest trophy's. :)

Wouldn't want to short change 'ya there...I was thinking that Mark ran the contest for at least the past 2 years, but it's hard to keep it all straight sometimes. I could've sworn he ran the contest for at least 2 years now...but now that I'm thinking about it, I think you are right...I think that last year was Mark's first year at the contest helm. Sorry about that...

Paul did not set time limits it is true...that was Mark's doing as he was pretty adamant that this was necessary to allow more folks to participate.

It's just Ms. Pac Man with different characters... but yeah, I supposed it would be cool to play.

Not exactly. The attract mode is different and a sound is added in Ms. Pac, but they are similar for the most part.

I do agree, that would be awesome even though I've played it before.

I've heard rumors of Crazy Otto at CAX. Is this true?

Yes, Crazy Otto will be at CAX along with the original programmer (Steve Golson). Mr. Golson is set to give what should be a fascinating talk on the development of the game. He will also be bringing a never-before-seen version of Super Missile Attack (the Missile Command "upgrade") for folks to play that was originally "hung up" via the litigation at the time.

Both will be set up in cabinet for folks to play. The gameplay may well be similar to the released versions in both instances, but they are still quite a nice part of video game history for folks to both see and play firsthand :D .

See y'all there!
