I need to replace the 2 sets of 3 kick buttons wires in my showcase cab I am trying to spruce up for the weekend. I am super low on hookup wire tho. especially that long. Can I just use a cat5 cable? it's 8 wires perfectly color coded for what I would need and I have a ton of it. this would be for buttons only not for power or anything.

I would imagine it would work at least for a temporary fix. It's not like you plan to run high voltage over it. I would still replace it in the long run but if you want to get it up and running now it will probably work.

I used CAT6 which is just slightly heavier gauge and it works just fine.

Cat 5 is fine. These are just switch wires - not power supply lines. No problems at all with the voltage. The only thing I would worry about is that most cheap cat 5 is solid, not stranded (in wall type). So, you risk breaking the solid wires if you flex them too much at the connection. Stranded cat 5 wire (as used for patch cables) would be a better fit, but the solid stuff will work fine if you don't bend it around too much.

cat5 wire is just fine. we used it for video camera installs all the time to hook up for the transformer at 24 volts with out any issues or voltage loss.
