Cashiers Check as Method of Payment

I heard of some guy getting fake hundred dollar bills at night in a video game transaction once. So I took one of the pens from work that test bills, and I always check them, lol.

there are fake 100 dollar bills that are so good, they fake the pens too.
They spray the bills with hair spray and then the pens don't react to the fake bills.
Check the bills and make sure all of the serial numbers are different.
Most of the time when people fake money they will use the same bills to make the copies from so all of the copies will have the same serial number.

He's not selling plutonium lol. I seriously doubt he's going to scam a guy that's only two hours away and he has to meet in person.

I dont see anything wrong with this, guys just being paranoid as well. You can call the bank to verify the check when he hands it to you. also jot down his license plate when he pulls out:D

I think the main thing is that the buyer wants some proof that he actually paid for the game. Maybe you can provide this with a signed receipt or something.

I am selling a game and the buyer wants to pay in a cashiers check, would you take it? Maybe I am just being over paranoid but in this day and age you can't be too careful. The amount is 800 dollars, in case that makes a difference.

I'd let him know that I want to see his ID (driver's license), and I'd take a copy or scan (or write down the info) from the DL. If he's a check scammer he probably won't show up at that point because it's not really worth the hassle of generating fake ID, and if he does, you'll have leads on him.

I'd also keep the serial numbers and pictures of the game. If he does give you a bad check, then the game is stolen property, and having the S/Ns and pics might help recover it.

Why can't he bring cash? Better yet, why don't you just have him go to the bank with you, withdraw the $800.00 and hand it over after the transaction? Better safe than sorry. I wouldn't even think about taking a cashiers check (well, maybe if it was from the same national or regional bank).

I know this sounds stupid, but JUST in case..make sure to write down his license plate ID before he leaves. I'm the paranoid guy that takes every precaution in a deal, and I haven't been screwed over yet :)

I've seen more than one fake cashiers check. They look legit. They look legit enough that a bank teller at my bank claimed it was authentic... until I pressed and asked her to call the issuing bank. I wouldn't take a cashiers check in person unless that person is willing to meet at the bank of issuance (NOT YOUR BANK).

The buyer's probably afraid after driving 2 hours, he's going to end up at a random foreclosed/abandoned house where a gang of thugs are waiting to beat him down and take his $800...
As long as you can call the issuing bank to verify, you should be fine...they should be able to verify the amount based on the check # to make sure it's legit.

This is what I have read everywhere and will be verifying with my bank in just a few minutes. And he knows that I will be calling the issuing bank while he is there to verify the check and amount. I'm not too worried, I worked dealing with check fraud for a while so I know all of the tricks and what to look for.

Well the transaction just went down, the guy came with the cashiers check still attached to the receipt from the bank and with the tellers card. She was able to verify the transaction and everything went smoothly. Maybe there are still some honest people in the world after all...

Did you verify the phone number on the business card actually was for the bank, and that he didn't print out some phonies with the phone # of his accomplice? ;)

Seriously though, it is good to see this worked out.

Just make sure the bank isn't "BANK OF POMONA". There is NO bank of Pomona and a Russian guy took advantage of peoples' ignorance for a few million dollars!
And if you wanna check cash bill quickly-hold the bill upto the light and you will see the security strip inside the bill. Each denomination has a particular spot the security strip goes, so once you get used to where they are, you can check 100's and 50's very quickly (like if you were a supermarket checker). The security strip as far as I know, cannot be faked. If the bills have been reproduced that faithfully (and they are by some foreign countries!) then it becomes part of US currency until it's found and destroyed.

Glad to know all went well... congratulations. It's a shame we must be so untrusting with financial transactions, but better safe than sorry.

Sounds like the other person understood this as well; it's the people who get all huffy and insulted are the ones I can't stand. They're usually the scammers!

So what did you sell for 800 smackers !

This is what I sold, though I am sure most hate them, they are a decent source of income to fund my collecting....

I will take a cheque, but not for the full amount. I usually try to make the cash/trade portion to be about what I have into the machine.

Yep, I always whip out the phone and snap the Plates.
