Just got my carnival today. Special thanks go out to Kalan and Arcrevival(Dave).
When I got it, I popped the back open made sure everything looked to be in order, it seemed fine.

When I flipped her on, the sound is just a squealing pitch of some sort. Otherwise the game functions nicely.

Not sure what to start with on this one.

Are the normal sounds present, too? Does it sound like an alarm?

Mine does something similar, but I'm not sure it's sound board related, as I can still hear it softly with the sound board disconnected.

When I get caught up on a few other things, I'll get back to figuring it out...

I would say it sounds like an alarm, but it's hard to say if the normal sounds are present. I would say no they are not. I heard the game play on youtube and it's a pretty cool, pretty distinct carnival song going on. This is nothing like that, more alarm like, as you suggested.

Okay. Mine has normal sounds also. The alarm sound seems to come and go randomly, from loud to faint.

You should recap the sound board, and maybe check the op-amps for your regular sounds. And make sure the volume is turned up...

When I got mine, none of the sounds were working. I began looking for a board and DogP had one so I bought it. Apparently there are two different small boards that can be mounted on the soundboard. As far as I know there are no replacements for the sound ROMs so be very careful with them. It turned out that my original sound ROM was bad and that many of the LM348s on the board were bad too. I just started socketing them and putting new ones on. It seems to be an age thing with the chips. All were weak or non-working. Also I had a bad chip on the ROM board. I can't remember exactly, but it seems like it ended in 14, might have been a schmitt trigger. If you want I might be able to post pictures of the two boards I have. Good luck with your repair.

Carnival start up squeal....

Mine does the squeal like a pig :0) every time you turn it on. After 5-10 seconds it goes away and the game starts. It is my understanding that this happens until the power supply reaches the correct voltages.

Carnival has a weird power supply that also has a re-set/watchdog in it. Many dead carnivals are actually power supply problems not board problems.

well I changed a beat up looking power cord with no earth ground prong, and immediately the loud ringing alarm wen t off and I got intermittend sounds. It was mostly dead quite, but the bullets made sound and every once in awhile the background carnival music started up when a duck dove down towards me but when I shot it, it went silent again.

So I get in back measure voltages they seem good, +4.9-5 on the ram leg on the board. The +12 is good too. Pull a couple of connectors and put them back on, fire her up again.

back to loud rining alarm. you can hear the bullets firing in the background but not the carnival music.

Is there a manual online somewhere? I can't tell what the service panel inside the coin door does. The volume works but the other 2 buttons don't seem to do anything. (haven't pulled it out to see if it's connected yet)

on page 9 of the manual it shows the pinout voltages of the top connector to the power board. On my board at position (13) which says AC , there is a wire coming from the molex connector, but it's been clipped and not running to anything. not sure if that matters, since I did have some random perfect sounds (had lol)

carnival

i had an ur one and the sounds would be screaching one in a while. i would just swift kick the right hand side of the cabinet, with the side of my foot and it would stop! worked every time. ed

That used to be called field maintenance!

here are some pics of the power supply board, with pictures of the parts I think I may need to be looking at. Can someone confirm or deny?

There are (4) 3-legged transistors (I think they are transistors)
should I change all 4?

edit: there are 5 actually. Near the lower left hand corner of pic 3 near the transformer there is 1 with a 3 pronged molex coming from it. It appears to be new as well as the 2n3055 bottlecap transistor on the frame appearing to be new. It does have an el dorado games tag on it, so it's been repaired in some fashion at one point.

carnival

I'll look up the one that was bad on mine. I have a component tester. I pulled all of them and tested each. I vsnt promise you that's what's wrong with yours. It just happened to be bad on mine.

I'll let you know tomorrow which one I had to change.

I did some random adjusting with the 3 adjustment pots on the power board, one thing I noticed prior to doing to was that I was only getting 4.6 at the leg of a ram chip, 5.1 at the connector. I can't turn it up any higher.

My squeal is currently gone, but random sounds still.

Carnival sound

Tried to find my record of which transistor I had to change but no luck. I can say this - I removed each one on the powers supply one at a time and tested them. 1 was bad. On replacement my game started working fine.

Also note that it does squeal on start up for a few seconds until all the voltages are in line. Then the squeal stops and the game comes up. I have had a couple of Carnivals and they all did this.

My squeal was gone at last check last night, but the background music is off and on at best. Mostly off. The game did quit to garbage screen once or twice, further making me think I need to get that 4.6 up closer to 5 at leg of the ram chip.

I need to look at the manual again and see if there is something that shows me how to adjust the +5 on the power supply board.
