Got a non-working board off a member here, hope to get it working as it's one of the few PCBs I would keep in my collection since I used to pump WAY too many quarters into this game.

Anyway, board is dead. Probed it and almost all the pins on the Z80 were high, thought the Z80 might be dead so I replaced it and same thing. Only pins that were low are INT and M1. Since it's a Z80 board, should I check the reset circuit?

Does this board suicide or anything? I see a black plastic module on the board. It's a very clean board.

My understanding is that no Capcom boards suicided until halfway through the CPS1 system production run, when they added Q-Sound. (Saturday Night Slam Masters might have been the first such board). BT predates CPS1 entirely, if I am not mistaken

Awesome, good to know. I never seen that black module before.

Work RAM is good, Z80 is good and the program roms are all good. Gonna look at the reset and interrupt circuits.

hey Xian, I will have to look for the board schematic when I move bacvk home after chemo. That board was from my first job at Romstar.

the black model is the sound cpu. Shouldnt affect main game work.

Look into pin 6, the Z80 clock, lets see how it goes.

Check clock and reset. The Z80 will do nothing until the reset circuit kicks it in the head.

They had suicide chips on some pre-CPS1, some CPS-1, and CPS-1.5 (Dash) systems. I don't recall any on BT, but if it has a battery on it and a Kabuki chip then it would have a suicide problem.

Buster Bros and the like had suicide chips and can be phoenixed. They were pre-CPS1

Tony if you dig up the schematic that would be awesome. I have a board that
has the common sprite corruption problem and would love to get it fixed.
I found one bad buffer and it helped a little. Most of the logic chips on the top layer
are only partially used and it makes troubleshooting this game a real bitch.

XX...gl with this one :)

Awesome dude, in fact when I saw the romstar sticker I first thought "I wonder if Tony worked on this board adding the additional caps to it". A schematic would be lovely.

Last night before I went to sleep I probed the board again. And noticed that the clock wasn't pulsing, it was just held high. So I need to check the clock and see why it's held high.

Thanks dude, I love this game, I can't just let it die like this.

I noticed the first 8 pins on the first port on the 8751 is completely dead, P1.0-P1.7

Edit: Also forgot to add that the reset circuit is working, on start up it goes low then high.

As for the clock signal it reads high, no pulses. Goes from the Z80 to an LS367 to an LS32 (1 input high and 1 low) then to another LS32 then to an LS74 then I stopped there for now.

A schematic for this board would be awesome i have 4 black tiger/black dragon pcb's sitting here that are in various stages of non working and have been waiting to be repaired in fact i havent seen a working one in at least two years every single one i come across is broken

Well, bought another Black Tiger board that had obviously palette issues so it was only a swap of new palette ram to fix it.

Now I need to swap boards to see where the problem is with the other board.

The good thing is that I let my 15yo nephew play it all the way through and he actually beat it with about 45 credits...lol He really likes playing these older arcade games. He says he prefers them to the newer crap.

I have one with the common sprite jailbar issue. I found one bad buffer so far, it cleaned up some of the enemy sprites. This board is a pain to work on with most of the logic having unused pins and being a double stacker. Hope the schematic turns up someday.

I agree. Following the logic of this board is a pain. A LOT of unused pins.

Well I have a working Black tiger board but don't have the tools to test it. So out of curosity what would a person need to test the board so I could try and be of a little help. :)

i just picked up a black tiger yesterday for 250.00, my favorite game, its the only one that i could beat on a quarter.

Bought a Black Tiger earlier in the year.
I used to play it all the way through too 25 years ago.

I haven't had much time to play. But I have been running through screens in my mind.

I seem to recall around 500k or so there is a big jump that was a bit difficult.

Do you recall what we had to do to make it.

As I recall its after the ninjas come out
