I need a 16v 470uf capacitor where the leads come out of opposite ends. Is there a name for this type of capacitor? I think from reading, the capacitors that have the positive and negative lead coming out of the same end (like the ones I'm accustomed to) are called radial leads???Thanks, Andy

Yes, axial. In a pinch, you can use a radial cap if the legs are long enough to reach the holes. Install with the polarity the same as with normal radial mount (longer leg is positive). You can usually stretch them out and then bend the ends 90 degrees to go into the holes. As long as the cap mounting standing up instead of lying flat doesn't interfere with anything, it will work the same...

capacitor question

Thanks for your responses. This site is so helpful. Are the axial version sold about everywhere the radial ones are?

Axial caps are sold at the same places, but they're not as common as a radial cap. Usually more expensive.

If you can get away with using a radial, it's usually easier and cheaper to do.

Pick up some heat shrink tubing and cover the leads of the radial cap so they don't accidentally short out on a trace running under the old cap or against another component.
