Just curious if it makes sense to change the filter cap on boards when a cap kit is done. I wouldn't think so since it's not included as one of the caps in the cap kit??

I just capped a K4900 and it has a very slight curve on the left when mounted vertically (but I am overall happy with the results; except I can't get the width coil to remove-still working on that). I will reflow the solder as I have heard this is a problem on this model. But wouldn't replacing the filter cap help?

Thanks in advance.

some say no.

but remember they are still 20-30 years old just like all the other caps.

of the three main chassis types i work on about 99% of the time i change them. i ordered them for that purpose so why not.

it makes me feel better. and in my opinion makes the image look better.

this is just my opinion. other share it and others don't.

I always replace the filter cap when doing a cap kit. To me, the purpose of replacing all the caps (instead of just the ones that test bad with an ESR meter) is to bulletproof it. That is, to do what you can while the chassis is pulled in order to get the monitor to last as long as possible without frequent repairs. It doesn't make sense to me to replace all the caps except for one in this situation.

I had to do that once, it was on a 4600 or a 4900. The pic had bad edges, and it fixed it. But the chassis was in rough shape.

I guess they don't add them because it would double the cost of a cap kit.

They don't add THAT much more cost to a kit. But, it definitely depends on the monitor.

Anything older than say...twenty years gets one. G07, K4600, K4900, K7000, etc. These also get a complete cap job.

Newer stuff (U2000, U5000, K7400, K7500) does not. Plus, I'm not as likely to replace ALL the caps on newer chassis, unless there's a very good reason for it.

Most of my kits are $11. These are high-temp, brand name capacitors.

I agree with that. Caps are going to go bad, no question. I get a K4900 cap kit for $5 from Bob Roberts and the filter cap is $4 by itself.

Still, $9 bucks and it's the last time you have to mess with it for years. That's worth it.

Thanks guys, I'll be getting some filter caps. I'll get one for the one I just capped and the 2 others in line.
