I'm doing my first cap kit on a Sharp Image chassis (rebranded Kortek). I found a manual with a schematic and cap list. The chassis has been capped before and some of the voltages have been raised (typical).

But...on this chassis there are a few capacitors installed that don't match up with the manual in terms of capacitance. A few 1uF (manual says 10uF) and one 47uF (manual says 470uF).

If you come across this, what do you do? Replace the capacitor with the currently installed value or replace it per the manual specs?

Depends, was the chassis working beforehand? If so, then I might replace it with what is already there.

If not, then I'd try what is in the manual. As there are quite a few different models of that chassis, make sure you have the right list.

Write down what you take out and where it was, just in case you have problems afterwards so you can go back to what was....

Thanks for the advice.

Working is a relative term, right? :) The monitor displayed a nice image but it had a fold over on top and the picture would not adjust to fill the screen (in both directions). I have written down the values of caps that were installed and replaced them with the same value. Luckily, I had some extra caps from a different kit.

After installation, the cap kit has taken care of the fold over. I noticed I have a pretty puffy B+ cap. That needs to be replaced, and hopefully will take care of the image size issues.

Update

All of the caps have been replaced, including the B+ filter cap. I can now adjust the picture to fill the screen.

Now that the picture fills the screen I have an issue on the right side. There is a slight brightness gradient that goes across the screen horizontally. On the left the pic looks great but as you move to the right it gets slightly brighter and there is a 1/4" vertical strip on the right that is much brighter. I have attached pics. I could not adjust this out of the picture.

Through some searching, I've read this symptom is a cap related. I couldn't find pics in the search but the verbal description seemed to fit my situation. Should I try to replace the caps that didn't match up with the manual? (See post #1) Or is this issue from other components?

Adjust the horizontal width in a little and see if there is a horizontal frequency adjustment pot. (might be called 50/60Hz or something like that too)
