Can't adjust sound - Data East Royal Rumble pinball

Picked up a nice Data East Royal Rumble today.

I wanted to make the volume a bit louder but when I move the volume knob theres loud crackle and the volume gets super loud. It either stays at the semi quiet sound or is super loud no matter where I adjust the knob. Any idea how I can fix this?

Sometimes just turning the potentiometer back and forth a bunch of times clears out the dirt and makes it work. It won't ever be perfect and you'll probably have to keep doing this, but it may get you going for the time being.

You can buy De-oxit and spray the dirt out of the potentiometer. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Or you can just buy a new potentiometer. They are pretty cheap. According to my manual it is a 10k ohm audio taper (logarithmic) potentiometer. You can find them at Radio Shack.

on the power supply board, check the bridge rectifier. If the solder is loose or cracked that can be the problem. Touching it with a little pressure can make the volume spike, If it is, just resolder
