Candy Cab Suggestions

Taito Egret 2 has the best monitor rotation mechanism but they're expensive and impossible to find parts for

FWIW the Taito Egret 29 also has the same monitor rotation mechanism as the Egret 2

They can be a bit cheaper (if you can find one), but they're about 100x more difficult to find parts for.

The Sega Blast City is without a doubt the cheapest way to get into a candy cab, they're also the most plentiful in terms of parts and they've got tri-sync monitors too which is nice.

The Net-City is probably the next cheapest/easiest to find and get parts for but they're also JVS not JAMMA so you'll need to rewire them if you want to run JAMMA boards.

Blast Citys were sold in the US as the dedicated cab for Sega Bass Fishing, and if you can find one of those they tend to be the cheapest way to get a Blast. I've seen them sell for as little as $75 for someone just trying to get rid of a stupid fishing game.

Net-City Uprights were also sold in the USA for Virtua Tennis and Virtua Tennis 2, and they can be converted to sit-down cabs by cutting the pillars at the correct location. These also tend to be the easiest way to get a Net-City since a lot of candy collectors don't want uprights and most people selling them are just selling an old "virtua tennis" machine as opposed to a "Japanese candy cab"

The two people I know of that regularly have Candy Cabs available for sale are KC in Rosemead: http://www.ebay.com/usr/kou_cheu?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
^he just imports and resells so make sure you inspect thoroughly or get lots of photos before buying

and Ken @ the game room
http://stores.ebay.com/thegameroom-com-website
^I believe ken's cabs are all fully shopped, but they're also a lot more expensive

I'm sure both of them have a lot more than what's on their eBay page.

^Yes KC has a LOT more than what he lists on ebay. If you are going to reach out to him, best to communicate with him well in advance of going to see him, and plan to spend at least 2-3 hours there. Take a working game compatible with whatever cabinet you're discussing, to test with. And as said, make sure you thoroughly inspect anything you're going to buy, just as a general rule of thumb, but no different here.

So excited found a blast city and checking it out tomorrow, most certainly sure going to buy it. Thnks to a really cool guy in this post for giving me the late text letting me know one came up for sale. I surely didn't think i was going to find one especially with me coming up for orders soon and not knowing if I'm staying in ca or going back to the east coast. It's currently set up for pandora 4 is it complicated to set it up for cps2? Most likely what I want to use it for so I can easily swap out my boards instead of constantly pulling out my drawer on my hs-5.

Pandora's Box is just a JAMMA board so your CPS2 should plug right in. you may need to get the proper kick harness connector for your CPS2 though. their should be a special harness to plug the CPS2 style kick connector into the blast city. (not difficult to make your own if you can crimp). it shouldn't be too difficult to find one though.

Is there some special mechanism for kicks on the BC's? Any pics of this? Or are you referring to the standard CPS2/3 kick harness?

On my aero, big blue and MAME cab, it's simply your standard CPS2/3 kick harness that connects directly to 1p and 2p buttons 4-6, test and service, and at the other end connects to the CPS2 A-board. It runs in parallel with the JAMMA connections for p1 and p2 buttons 1-3, but is a separate harness.

Blast City is the most flexible solution. I have a New Astro City (1 gen before Blast City) and a Naomi Universal (1 gen after Blast City). The Blast City should have a tri-sync monitor and harnesses are available to go JVS or Jamma. The New Astro City's monitor is NOT tri-sync, jamma only and the Naomi Universal's monitor is 60khz (VGA) and JVS only.
Love 'em both, but the Blast City is a swiss army knife.

Most candy cabinets don't just route wires directly from the control panel to the game board, they're designed to be modular so you can easily swap out different games and different control panels, plug and play.

The Blast City in particular was designed for the Sega Model 2 and Model 3 hardware, not JAMMA, however to make it modular it routes all of the connections for the control panel, power supply, etc. to a board called the "cabinet I/O"

you can get a blast city JAMMA harness that has connections for the cabinet I/O on one end and stanard JAMMA connections on the other end, as well as a "Model" harness for hooking up a model 2 or 3 board, and even a JVS harness for JVS games.

You need a sub-harness with a CPS2 connector on one end and the appropriate connector for the Blast's "cabinet I/O board" on the other end:

I was on a local CL pickup for an arcade monitor this past weekend and the guy had 5 candy cabs along with other US machines and pins.

I almost fell over. Super nice guy who really knows his stuff. He used to live in Singapore which is how he got them.

He agreed to shoot a future episode where he will give a walkthrough of this collection. I'm eager to learn, since I've been looking to buy one.

^^Good info. I naively assumed the wiring of my Aero was common to most. Is there an opening between the CP and the main cab area, where a simple CPS2 kick connector could be passed through, and the I/O interfaced bypassed for the kick wiring?

^Beautiful!

Do you have any photos on what that may look like? I'm so new to this stuff

that doesn't look too bad. that control panel is pretty terrible but other than that it looks complete and mostly original; just dirty. that looks like an official Sega harness too which is nice.

if you're concerned that it's not wired correctly all you need to do is get yourself a multi meter and follow the pinouts on the arcadeotaku link I posted earlier, and just make sure each wire is going where it's supposed to go.

Yea I've already ordered a blast city panel, and new buttons and sticks, balls etc. I need to go in and wipe out and dust the panel and inside. I saw a 1p wiring harness for the 1p but seems the 2nd player harness is sold out everywhere i've checked the only difference I can make out is that the colors of the wires are a little different and the connector is orange. If I buy to 1p and connect those do you think it might work or no?

yup, the only difference is the color, it should be pin compatible otherwise.

I recently had my Blast City Nanao 2901 go out on me (right after I finally get around to getting a 2 player control panel, argh!). Any word on who might work on those these days? Messaged Chad to no avail and not holding my breath since he has them crossed off on his site.

Contact PNL Video in California. they're one of the few places that specializes in Nanao chassis.
