I have a 4 way controller for my DK JR. The cabinet was pretty much destroyed, but artwork on front is still good and controller seems "ok". I was thinking of using it for more than one game. I noticed it has a metal part in that prevents it from going at angles (I know there is a name for it).

Can I just take that off and it will work or do I need to buy a new joystick? Seems simple enough but I thought I would open it up to the audience to see my lack of knowledge. Ha.

oh..maybe it's called a restrictor plate or something.

If it is a nintendo joystick (maybe others, I'm new to this hobby) there is a guide plate, which can be removed by taking out 4 screws. I have a DKJr game that is converted to Special Forces that I'm working on and the previous owner just removed the 4-way guide plate, but they do sell a 8-way.

Guide plate is #23-51 - http://www.mikesarcade.com/arcade/images/njoysticks/TKGT-23-50.gif

8-Way - http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=TNX-23-18

Electronally speaking an 8-way is just pressing two directions at once (IE up left or down left).
