oops, that was a question. Seriously, is this for games that are being restored or questions about restoration as well ? Personally, I would like to see questions stay under the repair/help forum and this be just for games that are restored or in the process of being restored. Having to sift through a bunch of question posts will defeat the purpose of this thread imho.

Yes, this is the plan. I was literally just emailing mclemore about drafting up a set of guidelines for this forum. Perhaps we can get some feedback in here from users too

Edit: My previous statement has caused confusion throughout the thread, please allow me to rephrase:

Threads within this forum to allow you to tell the story of your restoration. Within that thread open discussion about your project and as many questions as you like. I would like to avoid having new threads created within this forum for cosmetic/woodworking/painting specific questions. We should create a new sub-forum for non-technical general questions.

Also to avoid confusion, the point of this thread is to discuss ideas and suggestions for this forum. What I have said here is just some ideas of what I think, but I want to know what other users think too!

/Edit

Sorry if I am slow to reply, or lacking detail.. I broke my left wrist on Sunday :(

sucks about the wrist! I don't think restoration questions of asthetic nature (paint, how to repair damage, etc..) belong in the repair forum but in the general arcade questions.

I think what most people want is just restoration blogs. Maybe have one thread per restore so it is easy to see start to finish and keep things less cluttered.

We had some discussions about a restoration section for questions on cabinet repairs, art installation, etc. and for the most part it was shot down. Everyone loves a good restoration thread (read blog) and seeing a beat conversion game transform back into a classic. Having guidelines to make this intent clear would really help.

Should this forum be for all projects or restorations only? oops sorry about the question

Don't be sorry for asking questions. What kind of projects were you thinking?

Ideally each thread should be a summary or detailed log of the work done on the machine.

I was dreaming of having a sticky thread of "before & after" restoration pictures. 2-4 pics per post, not alot of chit chat between posts. Just arcade pure glory.

I disagree...i think questions about paint colors, carpentry, measurements, brands and even places to find items for restorations are very appropriate.

Finding out the paint color for an orange dk cab or how to replace swollen particle board isn't really a repair question. I don't see how that's not restoration.

The other forum is called "Videogames - Technical - General Repair And Help"

There is no wiki for this knowledge, and I think there needs to be a centrally located place for it.

I think he means a separate thread on it. If someone is doing a resto and replaces some swollen particle board it would be ok to ask how he did it in that thread, but do not start a thread in here on how to replace swollen particle board that would go in the repair forum. I think that is what he means. If someone paints a dk cab it would be ok to ask the color code in that thread.

I also do not think it would be to much of an issue or there is much to wory about the restoration forum on arcade controls seeks to work pretty well.

Questions

This is the new Restoration Forum. I don't see why questions in regards to a restoration aren't appropriate here. It's not the Restoration Gallery - i.e. just photos.

I'd rather be able to come to this forum to see what someone did for paint codes, vinyl sources, t-molding, cabinet repair, etc. It makes all the sense in the world to me.

As another poster mentioned, we have a Technical Forum, which I interpret as issues pertaining to non-cosmetic issues.

I explicitly asked for the cosmetic forum about 2-3 weeks ago and it got shot down.

Then maybe a thread for FAQs about Restorations in general so it's not asked over and over?

that forums says technical, general and help. This one should be a gallery only imho so we dont have to sift through a zillion questions to get to the resto pics.

Questions about specific resto's are fine though, right? I mean if i am reading a Pac Man resto and want to know what paint code he used, it shouldn't be a problem to ask the question in the pac thread, right?

I can understand not wanting a bunch of general restoration questions in this forum in their own threads, but asking specific questions about restorations in their perspective thread should be encouraged, not discouraged.

EDIT: And perhaps the name should be altered to RESTORATION PROJECTS instead of RESTORATION FORUM. The latter makes it sound like this forum is designed to discuss restoration techniques, etc. Also, the tech forum sounds like its about board repair/wiring/the inner workings of machines, NOT the wood-working aspects, art aspects, etc... so that name should be altered to be more descriptive or yet ANOTHER forum should be created.... perhaps RESTORATIONS - PROJECTS and RESTORATIONS - TECHNIQUE or something?

Agreed.

Just so everyone knows I am not the law maker here. Just trying to start discussion of what people think.

I've talked with mclemore about creating a separate section for cosmetic/woodworking/painting/howto. He suggested it before I had the chance to ask. So we'll see how this area evolves :)

I think there are just as many people who would like to ask questions about the restoration, as there are people who would not like questions asked. Personally I would like to be able to ask questions.

A suggestion would be one thread for the person who does not want to accept questions, and another for the person who does not mind them, and wants to discuss them and talk about there project.

Im glad we are all intitled to our own opinons. Mine is that we should be able to ask questions, Questions that may help with a restoration that others are doing. I suggest that if you dont want to talk about it, put it in a special thread. Marked dont ask me any fricken questions about my project. or just dont post it at all.

I don't think asking questions about how someone did something on their restore is so much the issue. Having a bunch of how-to and general restoration questions will make it not be a gallery. The mods just need to decide which way they want it or let it evolve by user action.
