Can still hear attract mode sounds when turned off (Journey)?

There are multiple issues with Journey's cassette player sounds, including grumbling and crackling:

I have those same issues, but there doesn't seem to be a fix for it. Now what I've noticed is that I can still hear attract mode sounds...even though I have my attract mode option turned off. The sounds are very faint, but can still be heard. The volume during game play is normal. Any thoughts?

On the schematic, see that the channels are summed with the opamps at C10 / E10. That output feeds into an LM3900 for each channel at D3, but there's a mute control line at D107.

Perhaps the game is still generating sound (use oscilloscope at C10/E10) and the setting for attract mode sound disable is merely asserting the mute line? If so then I doubt you can do much about it.

I've been fighting the sound on my Kick for a while (see here). These games have lousy sound circuits and I've been unsuccessful at making much improvement.

Unfortunately, an O-scope is out of the realm of my abilities. I've also been getting some very frequent loud crackles and the game stops at times. I'm going to check out my PS tomorrow and see if my voltage is running low.
