A local op has a few cps3 setup. I know the cart has a suicide battery. Do the mobo themselves have issues? As for 3rd strike is there an easy way with out playing the game to determine version?

Motherboards can go bad, yes. If it's 3rd strike you're in luck as it requires more RAM than any other CPS3 game. Meaning you'll be able to play any CPS3 game with a 3rd strike setup provided you have the cart/disc.

There's a cart out there that will play all games, you can find out more about that on arcade-projects.com

Every game on that system is a one on one fighter.

Cps3 is Capcoms worst system ever. Its got a motherboard that likes to fail, scsi drive that is well past its age, and god awful simm sticks that a getting more expensive everyday. Oh, and it plays all of three titles ; street fighter 3, jojos, and warzard. I run a cps3 multi setup on location. Sf3 gets great play, the others dont. Warzard is ass. Unless you truly LOVE sf3, its a pricey entrance fee.

I wouldn't say it was their "worst" system ever, but it certainly wasn't as friendly for all involved as CPS2 was. It's just that it came out at a time when the arcade scene was slowing down.

For modern setups, you can either go with the DarkSoft SuperBIOS for all six games, or stay with the single battery backed cart and the SCSI CD ROM Drive, or even better, use a SCSI2SD adapter and avoid the CD drive altogether. With the SuperBIOS the system must also have two 64 MB SIMMS and 4 128 MB SIMMS on the motheboard.

The carts are pretty easy to suicide if you move it ,or poke around at it while it's powered on. Seems to be more tempermental than CPS2 boards were.

DarkSoft actually has reproduced entire CPS3 carts as well as 128 MB SIMMS, and I believe 64 MB SIMMS are in the works too. So the rarity of SIMMS will hopefully no longer be a problem. It also appears as though he's working on a BIOS update which will take care of some of the "quirks" the current BIOS has.

To see which version of 3rd strike it is without powering on, just look at the inner ring area of the CD itself. If it says "CAP-33S-1" then it's revision 990512. If it says "CAP-33S-2" then it's revision 990608.

@Jdurg thanks for the info. Is there a way to bullet proof the cps3? Like bypass all the sensor (lack of a better term) so it's not so sensitive to movement/static?

Just make sure that the lockbar is attached to cover the cartridge when it's on and powered, or the holder is on and screwed in if the system comes in the metal cage.

Basically, just don't touch it and move it around when it's on and you won't have to worry about touching the wrong spot.

People also offer services for replacing the suicide battery for you if you are hesitant to do it yourself. (As the battery change is where it's easiest to mess up and cause your cart to suicide).

Over time, every CPS3 cart will die without the battery change. Thankfully, DarkSoft has his SuperBIOS which basically makes the game unable to be suicided. He's still working on improvements which may interest you. For more on his SuperBIOS system and what's needed, head over to the arcade-projects.com forums.
