Can someone explain what the screen pot does?

When I am initially setting a monitor up for adjustments I'll turn the Brightness and Contrast about halfway, unplug the video input cable, turn the SCREEN up until the screen starts to brighten, then turn it back down until the screen "just" turns to a nice clean black.
Plug your video input cable back in and adjust the regular brightness and contrast as needed, but rarely should you have to touch the SCREEN adjustment again.

Thanks, that is very useful!

It increases a voltage inside of the tube, which increases the kinetic energy of the electrons from the guns, which causes them to hit the phosphor mask harder, emitting more photons of light.

that's how I understand it...

On some chassis types, the screen and brightness pot is the same thing. there will be no other brightness or contrast pot on the chassis.

Since you didn't specify what chassis you had, it needed to be clarified for others who may find this post someday....

Here is a photo, the label says it is a Wells-Gardner 25 K7101

And for that, it has a coarse screen and fine brightness. Always good to give model info in the first post when asking the question....
