I was wondering if somebody could help me out on understanding the CPUs for the vs boards. Heard there are dummy RP2A03 xxx xx CPUs and some will work with certains games, or are they universal. Would like to know which RP2A03 xxx xx are dummy and which ones are universal/work with certain games.

The reason for this is their are so many different types RP2A03 xxx xx and just not sure which ones work with what. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I've been to link. Really doesn't give a good explanation on RP2A03 xxx xx. Not wanting info on the ppu's. Wanting info on the CPUs. Sorry if I didn't clarify that part. I understand the CPUs take the RP2A03. I just want to know about the last five letters/numbers. How to tell what's dummy and what's the ones that will work with the game Roms/ppu's

Thanks

Do you mean the Custom IC (RP2A04)? This is the one you have to use on Vs. Super Mario Bros. to make it work. Sorry I didn't understand what are were looking for.

There is no dummy RP2A03... you're thinking of the RP2A04. There are different revs of the RP2A03, designated by a single letter (A through H?). I believe someone (Mike's Arcade?) was selling RP2A03H and they didn't work with all Vs games.

Thank you for that part. If somebody can chime in and tell me what letters goes with what ppu's and does the 5 letters/numbers mean anything after RP2A03 on the the chip.

Thanks

So as long as there's not a letter after RP2A03 they are universal or no they are not.

Thanks

I would just avoid the RP2A03H. Just checked one my boards... my Goonies has an RP2A03E, and the other side has a plain RP2A03. I think the one I pulled out of an NES was an RP2A03G. I've swapped them around to play a bunch of Vs games and I've never had any problems.

So the RP2A03 you didn't have any problems with or RP2A03E & RP2A03G. You had no problems with. Thanks for all the replies to.

Thanks

Thanks you Matt for all you input. It's helped me out. And thanks to everyone else for their inputs too.

Have another question. If one side of the board is not being use do you have to put a dummy cpu ic in and have all the roms in..or can you leave it the whole side empty. and still be able to play the other side of the board.

thanks in advance

It's my understanding that for the board to operate, the unused side requires -something- in the slot. Mine has a RP2A04 in there. I have heard that you can get away with placing a jumper wire in place of this CPU. Possibly someone else knows which pins to jumper...?

Do I need the eproms and ppu in too, or just the cpu ic.

thanks

Do I need the eproms in or just the cpu ic.

thanks

Only the CPU ic is required in the unused side. - and as stated above, it is probably just for SMB. :) Thanks for the correction. Lol... Got distracted while writing that.

So, I'm confused alittle. One says you need the ppu's and nothing else. Is how im taking it. And another says you don't have to have anything. Or does it really not matter.

I would go with Matt's answer. I only have 2 games and I've never tried either without the second CPU, so my response was based on my experience with SMB needing the second CPU in the slot.

In a Vs. UNISYSTEM you need to populate the right side with the eproms, the correct PPU, and a CPU. The only game that requires a "dummy" CPU (i.e. the RP2A04) on the left side is Vs. Super Mario Bros. You populate the other side of the PCB with the RP2A04 ONLY (you don't need a PPU and eproms on the other side, only the RP2A04, and this only matters with Vs. Super Mario in a unisystem.)
