Can need for speed carbon run in 640x480 resolution?

This is kind of a long story but to make it short, I have a need for speed carbon with a dead monitor and I have a makvision tri sync monitor here (not the svga one), the max resolution of this monitor is 640x480. Need for speed to my understanding runs in 800x600 Couldn't I technically just go into the resolution settings on the comp and bump it down to 640x480 and run it on this monitor? In theory this makes since in my mind but want to make sure before I try it, as I not sure if the software automatically will bump the resolution back up to 800x600, and ive heard pushing a different resolution to these monitors after they are running can cause damage to the chassis.

*note I know lcd is an option but I am trying to get it running for the time being with what I have on hand.

I do believe the system auto-detects resolution and sets up for proper resolution from VGA+... at least the "conversion" version of Carbon does... as I "think" the dedicated version has a "resolution" setting in the operator setups.

Oh okay thanks for the info, I saw the thing in the manual about changing the resolution but it said it was for dedicated units only. The auto detect thing makes, since I am going to give this a try.

thanks again.

The pc changes resolution automatically. I have mine hooked up to and old crt tv with s-video and it changes resolution when booted up.
