If so how. I have a Blue Vs. cabinet. I am looking for a color code, type of paint, and any pointers.

I would think so...although I don't have details for you.

I just picked up a DKjr cab (with vs Goonies!!) and besides being made of particle board (ugh) it seems to be painted orange. So much so, that I can see some of the imperfections of the "wood" underneath the paint.

Can someone confirm that for some cabs, painted sides were stock? I always heard there was some sort of laminate involved, but it doesn't seem that way on my cab, at least at first glance.

Perhaps if laminate was involved in some of these cabs, someone sells a replacement laminate?

Of course, this is my first Nintendo cab, so I defer to you vets. Just wanted to let you know It seems like paint was used on my cab.

Also, and I'm guessing you already know this, but if it is a blue VS cab, it is really a DK cab with a conversion kit (or a wide body mario bros?). Unless again I am lacking some knowledge.

You can paint it but no nintendo cabinets came stock from the factory painted. You can search for DK paint codes and you will get codes from a number of places like sherwin williams, etc. actually... there, I just did it for you. Here you go, this post has a lot of various paint codes listed from a few places.

If your cabinet was painted, it was done after the fact by a operator or something. To my knowledge, mario body wide bodies were only converted to the smaller DK style cabs. Never seen any type of game converted vice versa. From my knowledge, there is no replacement laminate. Most people either paint, or use vinyl. Each process requires a lot of surface preparation to get it looking just right.

Classic Nintendo cabinets were not laminated. Whatever the finish was, it was applied in liquid form. Paint is as close as you are going to get to it, but make sure you get it smooth (no orange peel).

Yeah, they were some sort of baked enamel finish. I know a few that have painted and used TOG's laminate (you have to do both since the laminate is a bit translucent) and it looks stellar in the pics, but I would just opt for painting. Sand with 100 grit then go to finer grits until flat and smooth. Then fix any dings and prime and paint, sanding between coats. Go gloss or satin finish depending on your preference.

I've got both types of cabs, and the particle board cabs may very well have been painted. The finish on the two types of cabs IS different. The japanese cabs have a much smoother, shinier, and more durable finsih.
