I have a 490 but recently stopped working. The first step works, but that's it.

Should I open it up and look for blown capacitors and try reflowing solder? or is there someone who specializes in fixing them? or am I SOL?

thanks!

I fixed my B&K transistor tester. Opened it up and saw there was a +5 test point and I was not getting +5. Put in some new caps and flowed some solder and it worked. It's worth a try. Never looked inside a 490 though.

Usually you can NOT tell if a capacitor has failed by inspecting it visually. Reflowing random solder joints is completely pointless.

I'd suggest taking it to someone who knows what they're doing.

Is it completely dead? Maybe a dead fuse inside.

If it turns on but no longer gives readings:

a) Press down hard on the middle on the side the cords come out and see if it works. if so, then you have a cold solder joint inside.

b) Or give a gentle pull on the adaptor wiring where it comes out of the 490 and see if your readings come up. If so, then you'll find some pins inside where each wire has a metal tube tip that each slip over a pin (dumbass way to do it). Sometimes they get hogged out a bit from the pulling of the cord, or they can sometimes pop off (good luck figuring out which goes where if multiples pop off).

I never had any luck taking the thing apart (other than removing it from the case) because of the big knob that is mult-layered and seems soldered or bolted to each board inside. major headache trying to take it apart. my 490 at work still works mostly (although I sometimes have to push or pull to get a good reading). My 467 at home looks and works the same way, and I've never had an issue with it....

I've fixed a couple of older models before... not a 490...

They all seem to suffer from cracked solder joints on the board connectors/interconnects. You can see the rings around the pins in the solder if you look closely.
