On the Wikipedia Ikari Warriors page, it says:

Ikari Warriors was the first to use rotary joysticks: those which could be rotated in addition to being pushed in eight directions.[citation needed]

TNK III came before Ikari Warriors, and also used rotary joysticks, but Wikipedia requires sources. See the discussion page, under the Front Line section, to read what I've already written on the topic.

looking for a soldi referemce so you can be E-right :p eheheh

Other than numerous references to rotary joysticks and parts places that sell LS-30 joys for Ikari, TNK, etc - no.

I did find this image of a CP...

Yeah, I saw that too. I know that must be a rotary joystick, but what the hell is it? It looks like a short, fat LS-30. I doubt it was too comfortable to use. Has anyone here ever come across that particular joystick?

You can see arrows on the CP indicating that you rotate it (plus it says "rotate cannon"), as well as the 8 directional arrows to for controlling the direction of movement. Maybe that is proof enough.
