Can anyone out there fab a joystick mounting plate?

It's a little rough, but should do the trick.

Mike

I'm liking what I am seeing!

Uniformity of height and squareness of the bends is the most important thing. Has to be uniform/square along the entire bend and on both sides. Won't work if it isn't. Can't have any height difference on either side anywhere along the bend.

The smaller screw posts will allow for some centering of the joystick base and other joysticks to use this. So I am less concerned about precision of the hole and perfect tolerance for the mounting of the screw posts.

If you have an iL Eurostick handy, fasten the base down good to it and see how the fit is. Bolt it down tight and see if the screw posts stay fastened to the mount. Those screws are going to have to take a lot of force over time so make sure they are in there good. Take some pics. Thanks!

If you can have a 2nd one fabbed up, please send one to sainrub too. Probably best to have two sets of eyes on this effort before it goes into mass production. Thanks!

You're right, given the right tools, this could easily be made. But most arcade hobbyists don't have such tools. We do have woodworking tools at most. Also, we want better precision and given this needs to be made, 99% of the time in pairs, no hammering as that would produce inconsistencies even among a single pair. Stamped is best. Short of that, a proper metal brake to make the folds. Hammering is out of the question. ,

I wasn't talking about mass production, and you said nothing about mass production in your original post. And who says that "most arcade hobbyists don't have such tools"? A bench vise, hammer, and drill aren't exactly exotic tools. Inconsistencies that don't affect function and can't be seen from the outside don't necessarily matter to someone who wants to make something like this for himself.

We don't want the cheap Dynamo style where bolts are drilled through the top of the CP which detracts fro the CPO's artwork and grinds at our knuckles as we play our games.

That's not the "cheap Dynamo style". In fact, the original dedicated game in a "cut corner" Dynamo cabinet, Ikari Warriors, had threaded studs welded or otherwise attached to the underside of the control panel for mounting the joysticks. The same applies to most, if not all, other dedicated games in a Dynamo cabinet such as Victory Road, Double Dragon II, P.O.W., Guerilla War, etc.

On the other hand, plenty of "Golden Age" classic cabinets from companies such as Atari, Bally Midway, Nintendo, etc., simply had holes in the control panel for carriage bolts to go through.

By the way, who is this "we" that you've been referring to throughout this thread? Who else are you speaking for?

The studs were welded in, I didn't think there was enough material for press fit.

I don't mind helping people out with making these, but this would be done in my spare time, and you would have to understand that. I am currently talking to member sainrub, about the joysticks he offered up as fitment mockups, to be sure that all three sticks have the exact hole spacing dimensions.

So if Vegas12 wanted to take on getting them mass produced, by all means don't let me stand in the way. However, if there is only going to be a need for a few, and you have patience I'm here for you.

I'm just not sure what the demand would be for something like this.

I'm making a trip to the metal shop to pick up some paperboy panels and was going to try and get an estimate. My gut is that the necessary volume needed to cover setup costs will be difficult to find...

When it comses to using my shop, there is a flat fee they have to cover to justify setting up the press break for a job... and the time to create an auto CAD file... that's the primary driver for break even math, rather than the materials or size of the piece... boxing and shipping is my headache - how many people do I have to communicate with, track payments, etc... having sold a bunch of panels I now have a greater appreciation of "shipping and handling" charges...

Talked to the shop... it would be $20 per piece for it to worthwhile... with a 20 piece minimum

20 pieces serves ten 2-player cabs. That price isn't prohibitive at all. But then adding in the shipping cost and we are looking at about $50 shipped correct?

I could use 4 pieces myself, if anyone knows how to start a poll on KLOV, please make such a post so vegas12 knows if even the demand is there. Thanks!

I don't think shipping is too much of an issue if they can fit into a $6 flat rate US post flat rate box... it just depends on how many can be fit in a flat rate box...

Ok, cool. I am fabbing up a CP for a US Atomiswave Upright cab. Will do the same for one of my Big Blue's. Let me know the hole dimension I need to bevel out when you get it.
